What type of chickens to buy?

Hi I'm a newbie, Would like some advise on what chickens to buy? We only want about four. We are awaiting our delivery of our coop, & my husband is going to make the run. Our daughter is ten yrs old and very excited about getting some chickens, as we are too. We live in the wiltshire area. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Dee & Mick
 
Hi Deedee,I adore all breeds and hybrids of chicken,but,as you're in Wiltshire I would suggest (if you want large brown eggs)going to see Legbars of Broadway(he's moved to Wiltshire)and obtaining some Burford Browns from him.He is very reputable and actually guarentees his birds.He is also a real gentleman who will help you in any way he can,his afterservice is brilliant.
If you want something a bit smaller,bantam sized,I can't recomend Booted Bantams or Sablepoot's enough.The best breeder of these is Sue,Victoria's Poultry and she breeds healthy,friendly lovely birds.She also offers a brilliant after service,she is based a distance from you,but well worth the trouble of visiting and chosing some birds.
 
Hybrids are a good choice for beginners. They should cost you £15 each or so and you should get a good number of eggs. They are usually quite hardy and you will definately get hens, whatever age you buy your girls at because the boys can be identified at a day old.

Thanks Lydia & Tom, for your replys. I've just found a webite called harper hens which is a couple of miles away from us. This is what they stock coral whites, colombiam blacktail, mendlesham, ranger & road rock. Have anybody heard of these breeds?
 
Those are all hybrids,sometimes other sellers will call them by a different name.Most will be a rhode island red cross,but the white obviously aren't.
 
clumbian blacktails seem quite popular in your neck of the woods, i saw loads at the last auction i went to at dorchester, they are a brownish/red colour with black tails of course
probably a RIR cross
 
I can recommend Columbian Blacktails, they lay a fantastic sized eggs, Waitrose use these birds for their extra large eggs. Very tame and hardy things. Word of warning though don;t leave your back door open or they will be in your kitchen under your feet wanting a cuddle and natter :D :D :D
