Hi,
I'm surprised to see my chickens are going in to roost at about 5.45pm even though it is still light until atleast 9.30pm. I've seen a neighbours hens mooching about much later than mine.I'm fairly sure they stayed up much later last year. The only change is that they now can get out as soon as it's light when prevously they had to wait till about 7am-could that be relevant? I thought maybe I could lock them up until 7am tomorrow just to see if they stay up later tomorrow night. Not that it's important they stay up, I'm just curious. :-)19

Nancy went to bed at 7 ish until her new friends turned up, now they are still up at 9.15. Not sure if its to do with them settling as a flock, but the new girls are definitely encouraging late night partying :)

Millie goes to bed just after 8pm (but then she's getting on a bit). Varta, Energiser & Duracell will happily stay up until just after 9pm.
I'm curious as to what time they get up, given that the VSB is probably opening the door at about 4.30am at the mo, but not quite curious enough to get up early enough to find out

At least you can be sure your coop doesn't have red mite in it, if your girls are that keen to go back to bed!

Hi, I forgot to stop them being able to get out this morning so they were under my window at 4.30 screeching with delight at the seed thrown on the floor under the bird feeder. Must remember tonight just to see what happens in the morning, and to give me more shut eye!
I just think it's a shame on a nice evening to be going to bed early-the dark nights will be back before we know it and they should make the most of it now. If I shut the stable where they roost they just congregate outside it or go and roost in the barn where I don't want them.
My ducks on the other hand would happily stay out all night so I 'm having to round them up at 11-11.30 to get them in as I want their eggs hopefully laid in the duck house and not just anywhere in the garden. One had a water birth this week and I found her egg in the duck bath.
Happy days!!

The layers were still up at 10.00p.m. last night, the bantams (as usual) had an extremely tiring day of it, and popped up to bed long before dark - what is it with Pekins and rest?!!

I need to adjust my electric opener. Went out to check at 9.30 last night and found pop hole shut with Henny still outside. That's unusual as the Welsummers were always the first to bed. I realised the time was set incorrectly so I need to alter it and adjust the closing time. I can also set it to shut the later of time or light level but haven't managed that yet. Battery went flat because plywood door had swollen and kept sticking - have a nice aluminium door now so battery should last ages.

They are still up at 20:00, when I go and get them in from the allotment into their cage, and they go to bed about 21:00.
Now, its the waking up at 5:30 that I find irritating....

Dog would agree with you there. Would happily stay in bed till 11 if I wasn't up early to deal with the girls
