Red my gorgeous little girl, every morning runs out of the shed at a huge speed... Jumps into the field, then around the back of her shed, spends no longer than 5 mins behind there, then does it all in reverse. I have tried to get around the back of shed but so overgrown! Been doing this for a week! Not broody again? As out with others all day? X

Hi Katie-May...I had the same with a maran bantam about this time last year in all the snow..couldnt see what she was doing..because of four foot icicles on back of run...she dissapeared after that and we thought foxy must have got her ..but three weeks later waddled in to the greenhouse with thirteen babies...maybe thats what your 'red' is up to.
Best Wishes Timmy

We're all thinking the same. Sounds like she is laying a clutch behind there and will soon disappear to incubate them Katy-May.

Could be laying a stolen clutch, could just be a little odd !

Surely too quick to lay a egg?! This morning she actually waited until I walked back into the house to sneak back there, she knows I'm watching!! I am not buying her fertile eggs again. Although she is button's girl never seen them being anything but friends. Oh timmy what a shock that was for you!! Very cute though x

The funny thing is Katy- May that a little old English Game bantam is doing the same..though I have found her nest in an old tree stump there are seven eggs to date ..I thought I had lost her to foxy weeks ago but then this morning she actually flew in to feed.....I am sure 'Red is laying can't wait to hear how she ..and you ! get on ..take care ..timmy x

Howdy,

She probably is laying an egg(s). One of my hens lays an egg
in a few minutes, yours may be doing the same. ;)

I managed with lots of falls & scratches to get behind the shed at the weekend... 20 eggs?? I have taken them away, but she still continues!! This weekend I am going to fence off how she does the escape route. Your bantum sounds as naughty as my girl timmy! I do say to her, it's winter!! No babies! That is true marigold, no fox worry at least! X

Well I hope you are OK! Keep those scratches clean mind... :D

I remember setting a complex bait station for a rat problem a few years ago...and I thought I had made sure that non-target species could get access...nonetheless one determined broody managed to squeeze into and lay a HUGE clutch of eggs next to it! :D :D

Is she likely to be laying fertile eggs, Katie-may? I don't know what Buttons' social arrangements are, are they still 'just friends'? Seems a bit of a missed opportunity.... any chance of setting up a broody coop or borrowing an inci?

I am going to venture back there again at the weekend & take the eggs to see if fertile. Button wants to be more than friends, so I don't know what they get up to at night time! Never seen a successful attempt! X
