Hi all

Just wondering what age is best to start clipping wings, my girls have started free ranging this weekend and have been making attempts to fly a lot higher than I expected!!

Thanks, Ria

I was thinking I will have to clip my girls wings too. I've been amazed at my maran, she's a big girl & I didn't think she'd be able to fly very high.

I would have thought if they've got their flight feathers its OK to clip them. They'll grow back again after the moult so have to be clipped again.

You can clip them as soon as the blood has gone from the shaft.

Look at each feather shaft and if it looks black / dark, it has blood inside it and is growing. Check each feather as you go, they all grow at different times, you may need to clip them in a few stages.

How to Clip a Chickens Wing might help.

mine were done for me when i bought them, they were 16 weeks old, they are hybrids, i don't know if that matters?

Hybrids usually mature quite quickly but by 16 weeks, most hens have their primary feathers..
