why do my chooks choose to stand in the honking rain and get soaking wet when they have access to a nice dry coop does anyones chooks do the same ??????? :roll:

Yes, some breeds do seem to be a bit ... ummm ... thick?
My Orps used to get soaked every time.
You may find that they don't want to go in their house during the day much - I always build my chook houses up off the ground and they always prefer to go underneath rather than inside.
I would build them a small sheltered area outside and see if they use that.

mine hate to go in so i put a piece of plywood over their run in wet weather and they huddle under that rather than go in, but their new house is off the ground so they will be able to shelter under it.
If they are freeranging they tend to hide under shrubs and bushes looking for worms

Same here. They can shelter under most of the houses. We did have a special shelter for them, but it got 'sheeped'.
Some prefer to shelter under our trailers, trouble is they sometimes nod off and then forget to go home.
I have spent many a fun (not) hour kneeling in mud trying to extract hens from under trailers.

Usually by the time I spot them it is already dark and they have no interest in coming out in the rain for anything.
I know I can't leave them as we seem to get Badgers most nights. (from the damage we find in the morning)

Oh dear,badgers could be very bad.you'll have to evict the sheep,or build another shelter........... .

The new shelter is one of those projects that never seem to get to the top of the list.
My design, is to enable all the various chooks to be contained (in compliance with the defra guidelines) in the event of a national Avian Flu outbreak.
My coops are not designed for the hens to stay in all day so I would need a wild bird proof enclosure with a solid roof.
Quite how I will persuade my very independent free range hens to agree to step out of their various coops and into the quarantine area each day I don't know.
