Warning - Chocolate Orpington Eggs Ebay

Hi all,

There's a 'sticky' bad ebay sellers thread now too... perhaps you'd like to add the seller's ebay names and why they are bad on this thread?

I also feel it's important to advertise these bad sellers to hopefully stop people buying their eggs - however it's always important to communicate with them / check they haven't made a genuine mistake.

Personally, I've had some great results from ebay and some bad and I've seen some of the top breeders selling eggs after they have finished their own hatching - the most I've seen eggs go for is £250 for 6.... so I understand why people sell them on ebay!

Hi Peeps

Ive just jioned this forum and came across this, its a shame about the choc orps, it gives genuine people a bad name, I have been lucky with Ebay , the birds i have hatched are what they are supposed to be! But I did buy from a guy way down south and out of the 20 eggs i ordered one egg was what i asked for, also he sent me 18 and i asked where the other 2 eggs were, he said he could only fit the 18 in the boxes????? even though id paid for 20, theonly one that came out was a cream legbar hen , i did order that, but i thought i had a cream legbar cockerel too, until i noticed it was a Aruacana!!!! hes lovely but i didnt order it, i didnt even know what one was!

So i ended up with all these birds i actually had to identify myself ,,,,never again!!!!

I have always been very lucky with me e bay egg buys, I have had a couple of severely shaken in post -one was instantly replaced by seller-all 6 hatching., the other I never followed up. All have hatched what they were meant to be and I dont think Ive had more than a couple of infertiles out of 6eggs. I think the main thing is to stick to buyers you have some knowledge of and be very astute in your interpretation of feedback left etc. Ros

you're out of date now Tim,they are selling 6 eggs and getting bids of £290 or more.

I sell surpless eggs on ebayers, and found 99% of buyers have been great, but have had one or two that have been awful and these are the ones that give ebay a bad name.

One occasion I sent out 6 blue orp bantam eggs out, he emailed me 4 weeks later to say none were fertile, I offered to replace if he sent the eggs back, he sent only 4 eggs back with a faint lion stamp on them!!!! I heard later he had tried it on with other sellers, buying supermarket eggs trying to get the stamp off them and then posting them back to sellers for replacements!! Amazing!

The other occasion a lady bought 6 lavender sabelpoot eggs, all fertile so she bought another 12 a week later. She emailed me when the 1st lot hatched to say one had hatched black? and wanted me to refund her the money and send a further 6 free eggs, asked for a photo of the "black chick" and explained I have out of 80 odd chicks never had a single black, she refused to send a photo and not only left negative on that one but left negative on the 2nd lot of eggs that she had only had for 2 weeks!!! Looking into her feedback she had only bought 3 lots of eggs on ebay and had left negative on each of them.

On the positive side I had over 400 happy people last year and have met some lovely people that I still keep in touch with from when they have been to pick up the eggs or from people who have emailed me to tell me how well they have got on, so there is always a silver lining to each cloud.

I think when you look at the 400-2 you know which side of the fence you fall on ;) :D

There are alway going to be a few problematic people and you won't please them ever or they will try to rip you off.

If everyone was the same wouldn;t life be boring, although I am one of these people that takes it all to heart! :? Will have  to toughen up for this year ;)

I have found the most reliable sellers to buy chocolate orpington eggs on ebay are only a very few top main breeders for which they originated from. I know other people have paid very high prices & have been lucky to get 1 egg hatch if that !! So all please do beware of this.

John

i guess someone was well mad about this

Seriously , what is it with Chocolate orpingtons? , after all they are just off colour blacks ;)
surely the easiest way would to not buy eggs of ebay  and breed your own?
Breeding your own
for example; Buy a choc cockeral (doesn't need to a perfect bird) and mate it to some good black hens ,
then mate offspring togther .
by doing that ; 1. You'd have much better birds in terms of type and size .
2 You would have refreshed the gene pool .
3 You could sell the orignal cockeral as you'd have plenty of chocolate offspring to breed future generations.

LOL,so you said 'great,I'll have 2 or 3'...the price for them is outrageous.

Prices of Chocolate Orpington Bantams are coming down, you can pick up trios for £250 - £300 now, by the end of the season you'll be able to get them for under £150. So many people have them now. One pullet was at a local auction the other week and it only went for £38.

It was the same with Gold Laced Orps when they first came out I seem to remember...

The prices will drop in time.

Personally I think lots of people want them when they see the hatching egg prices and see £££ - but they fail to realise that by the time their birds are old enough to produce reasonable eggs, the prices will have fallen. They are slow to mature and really, the egg size will only be up to scratch in the 2nd laying season.

Tim, I hope you are not showing your age. Gold Laced Orps - were they the bantams or large fowl?
How much so pairs / trios of Gold Laced bantams go for these days?

They were L.F... I had some really lovely birds but as always had to cut back to concentrate on my other lines.

Umm I thought it was about 8 ... ish years ago? :?

Hi There,
On the subject of prices, a friend of mine said that a pair or L/F Gold laced orpingtons went for £ 140 at Salisbury auction yesterday ;)
I've also been quoted £ 20 per hatching egg for bantam jubilee orpies. (I decided not to buy just yet!) - anyone know of any going cheep, cheep, cheep

Hi Hippie Chick, there weren't any large fowl gold laced orps,a trio of bantams and they they went for £450.
Um,I know 'cos I placed the winning bid.
