virus induced cancer?

I had Betty put down yesterday morning because she had a huge tumour in her abdomen and had had a prolapse... I was telling our farmer neighbour about this and she said it sounded like a virus that chickens get at about a year old (Betty was just coming up to a year). Has anyone ever heard of this? I am now really worrying about the rest of my chooks...
The farmer also said that I should vaccinate the pekin bantam chicks that arrived at the weekend. Is this good advice?
 
Hi, I have never heard of anything like that- you cant vaccinate against a tumour happening - and as for the pekin- you would need to know what it was! I think your farmer is getting mixed up with something else- you can vaccinate against Mareks,Newcastle Disease, Salmonella, Infectious Bronchitis- amongst others-but if it was a tumour then no.

Hi Gretyl. ----I m no expert but I understood that exposure to some of the Herpes group of viruses in the first few weeks of life is the cause of developing later malignancies such as Mareks disease , leucosis and some sarcomas . If vaccinated against these viruses as a day old it Should theoretically prevent infection with Herpes virus and so prevent the later development of tumours etc associated with Mareks. Etc. - I may well be wrong -just my understanding! Ros
