I heard something last night about a vet that really made me cross.

An elderly relative of a friend lives in Surrey. Her neighbour, also elderly, has started keeping a couple of chooks. She was worried about one & the two ladies decided she should take it to the vet.

On walking in to the surgery his first words were 'Oh, I've never had a chicken in here before'. & when she asked what she should do with her, he replied ' Put her in the oven!' :o

He then gave the chook an injection & charged her ...........£45!

Glad he's not my vet .

That's a lot of money for a jab. Most vets only charge a small fee, a few pounds at most for a jab in a chicken. Its the consult that probably cost the earth. My old vet used to charge me £12 for a chook consult. I never paid more than £35 total for treatment. And that was for a hen's crop to be cut open and emptied and then stitched back up.

She should find a decent poultry friendly vet and enquire about their rates before signing on with them.

I think that is way above the average price, some vets are only in it for the money, and don;t really care about the hens welfare.
I would certainally choose a different vet if I were her in the future.

That charge does sound like extortion,I also think his comments were very cruel.Years ago a vet made a comment along those lines about a pet rabbit i'd taken in.

Vet's do charge differently though,a few years ago on a dog forum found out that for vaccinations for a dog could be double or treble the charge in some parts of the country compared to my vet.

Did the chicken get better? I do hope she did.
