Hi everyone, my Wyandotte which was walking strangely seems to have got alot worse. I went to the run today and she seems off balance. She still keeps lifting her legs up high and using her wing to balance I think as she keeps spreading one out. I'm concerned that she might have Mareks as we had a young bird die of that(we think, the vet didn't know for sure) which was about 6 months old. This was over a year ago though). This Wyandotte is about 2. Do you think I should take her to the vet? My husbands keeps saying lets see how she is in a couple of days but I am worried the others maybe at risk.............. :(

Hi
I would personally take her to a vet, it could be a number of things. Have you checked her ears, if she is off balance could possible have mites in ears / ear infection?

Thanks for replying VP. I took her today (got very wet as it was pouring of rain). I'm very relieved though as the vet said it is definitely NOT Mareks. He reckons it is a neurological problem , maybe an infection of the spine so he has dosed her up with Baytril and we have to give her further doses once a day. He said it will not affect the other chickens so I am happy about that. Just hope she recovers, though she is in good spirits, drinking, eating and pooing OK. I was so glad to be able to bring her back home with me. :D

It does sound neurological, however, have a good check around the run, as botulism/poisoning can also look very much like the symptoms your hen is presenting with.
Good luck with her and hope she recovers well! :)

There is a Vitamin you can give them for neurological reasons - but unfortunately cant remember what it is.

Thanks, does anyone know which vitamin this is? I have checked the run and can,t see anything which could poison her. However, all my hens have access to the garden so that is more difficult. I don't put down slug pellets or any other chemical on the ground. We are still dosing her daily with the Baytril as the vet prescribed but she is still walking strangely. The good news is that she is still neating loads so that must be a good sign I guess. :-)17

Vitamin E & Vitamin B, I havent tried these myself but have heard it can help, also ground up brazil nuts I have read elsewhere. Hope she improves :-)17

Just had a another idea - seaweed helps with loads of things.

Just to let you know the Baytril seems to have helped alot. She is out and about with the others now, still not completely normal (who is? ) but greatly improved. :-)08

Its been so long since I've been normal I can't remember Elmwood

Glad to hear shes on the mend :-)17

I dont know what normal is either

Yes Aileen, I am soooooo pleased, really did not think the treatment would work like it did, you wouldn't know there had been anything wrong. So chuffed I was thinking of sending a little card to the vet to thank him (very sad I know, just can't help myself )
