Hi guys,
Please can someone help me...
My adult stag turkey tried to mount one of my chickens on Thursday evening. He jumped on her back and pecked repeatedly at her head/neck. My husband got him off her and she didnt seem injured. Friday morning when I went to see her she was still in the hut with one eye closed looking sorry for herself so I took her to the vet who said she had no visible injuries and to take her home and keep her seperated.
He eye kept opening and looked fine but she insisted on keeping it closed most of the time.
I put her in a seperate part of the chicken run Friday eve and she started to eat (only if the food was placed in front of her) and at bed time she took herself off to a nesting box. Saturday morning she came out of the nesting box but just sat on the grass again with her eye shut.
I took her inside my house and she is now in a dark room on her own. She hasnt eaten much or drank hardly anything so yesterday (Sunday) I started to hand feed her Live natural yoghurt, tomatoes and water with ACV. She drank herself quite a bit (if I held the bowl to her beak) and then went to the toilet (quite watery). I fed/watered her every half hour to an hour but both her eyes are now shut and she is permenantly sat down and her she seems to be having difficulty holding her head still. It keeps twitching to the side. This morning she is much the same but I have tried her with a little sardine and tuna as she has lost a huge amount of weight. Also put some Tylan powder in the water to see if that helps. She is going to the toilet and they are a little firmer now (dark green in colour with white bit).
When I pick her up she opens her eyes and when she sees the yoghurt etc in front of her she will enthusiastically peck at it but then after a minute or so her eyes close and she starts to hang her head then it twitches back up and this repeats over and over.
My husband syringed 2x lots of ACV & water down her this morning to re-hydrate her from the night and she was quite strong in fighting him and even made her chicken crow noise. When he put her back down she was stood up and started to peck at some tomato but then led down again and shut her eyes.
She seems to find it easier to eat really wet food such as yoghurt and she almost sucks at the tomato. She doesnt take pieces and eat them though like she would normally do.
Some times she seems perky then next time I check she is kind of led on her side, eyes shut as though she is about to pass away then an hour later she opens her eyes and eats again. She went down hill quickly on Saturday but has remained the same ever since.
Please does anyone have (a) a suggestion as to what is wrong with her as I havent seem symptoms like this before, (b) any advise as to how to make her better and (c) am I fighting a losing battle and in my desperation to make her better actually being cruel to her?
Please can someone help me...
