Hi guys,
Please can someone help me...
My adult stag turkey tried to mount one of my chickens on Thursday evening. He jumped on her back and pecked repeatedly at her head/neck. My husband got him off her and she didnt seem injured. Friday morning when I went to see her she was still in the hut with one eye closed looking sorry for herself so I took her to the vet who said she had no visible injuries and to take her home and keep her seperated.
He eye kept opening and looked fine but she insisted on keeping it closed most of the time.
I put her in a seperate part of the chicken run Friday eve and she started to eat (only if the food was placed in front of her) and at bed time she took herself off to a nesting box. Saturday morning she came out of the nesting box but just sat on the grass again with her eye shut.
I took her inside my house and she is now in a dark room on her own. She hasnt eaten much or drank hardly anything so yesterday (Sunday) I started to hand feed her Live natural yoghurt, tomatoes and water with ACV. She drank herself quite a bit (if I held the bowl to her beak) and then went to the toilet (quite watery). I fed/watered her every half hour to an hour but both her eyes are now shut and she is permenantly sat down and her she seems to be having difficulty holding her head still. It keeps twitching to the side. This morning she is much the same but I have tried her with a little sardine and tuna as she has lost a huge amount of weight. Also put some Tylan powder in the water to see if that helps. She is going to the toilet and they are a little firmer now (dark green in colour with white bit).
When I pick her up she opens her eyes and when she sees the yoghurt etc in front of her she will enthusiastically peck at it but then after a minute or so her eyes close and she starts to hang her head then it twitches back up and this repeats over and over.
My husband syringed 2x lots of ACV & water down her this morning to re-hydrate her from the night and she was quite strong in fighting him and even made her chicken crow noise. When he put her back down she was stood up and started to peck at some tomato but then led down again and shut her eyes.
She seems to find it easier to eat really wet food such as yoghurt and she almost sucks at the tomato. She doesnt take pieces and eat them though like she would normally do.
Some times she seems perky then next time I check she is kind of led on her side, eyes shut as though she is about to pass away then an hour later she opens her eyes and eats again. She went down hill quickly on Saturday but has remained the same ever since.
Please does anyone have (a) a suggestion as to what is wrong with her as I havent seem symptoms like this before, (b) any advise as to how to make her better and (c) am I fighting a losing battle and in my desperation to make her better actually being cruel to her? :(

Firstly,I don't think you're being cruel.
I imagine that when the turkey stag jumped her,he has bruised her internally,so she is feeling sore.
I would keep her separate from your other chickens,to give the bruising time to go naturally.
I would feed her a mash, you don't need to buy layer's mash, pellets soaked with warm water will crumble up into a lovely mash that you can make as runny or firm as you want. This should be more nutritious for her than yogurt on its own, altho I would still put a spoonfull of natural bio yogurt into the mash.
It is frustrating, having to hold a bowl of food in front of her,for her too eat,but I would do this every 2 hrs, but, leave the bowl with her so she can help herself when you're not with her.
As to her eyes,I would buy her some optrex from a chemist designed for humans,or the spray you can spray onto closed eyelids.Just don't tell a chemist you want it for a chicken or they may not want to sell it to you.
I don't think she has an eye infection,I think she is keeping her eyes closed because of pain,or shock.
If it is shock,a spoonfull of honey(suggest teaspoon) or a sprinkle of dextrose powder on top of her mash will help.I am suggesting using optrex to keep her eyes moist,so would chose one for refreshing/revitalising tired eyes.
You can also hard boil a couple of eggs, and mash them up into the mash.

Give her time to get over this,if she does worsen, imo I think you would be doing the right thing for her by culling her, but, hopefully, she will make a full recovery.
Good luck,I'm hoping she pulls through for you.

Sounds like she took quite a bashing from the turkey and it could take some days for her to recover. You certainly feed a strange diet ! Keep trying if you realy want to save her but obviously, if the time should come when she's showing no improvement, you'll know what needs to be done.

Thanks guys. Last night she was looking very very weak and had stopped feeding altogether so I took her to the vet yesterday eve and he put a tube into her stomach and got quite a bit of fluid mixed with a glucose solution straight into her to give her some energy and re-hydrate her plus he gave her a steriod injection to help her with the shock.
This morning I can see a huge improvement. Still not there yet by any means as she is still very weak but she ate some layer pellets (she did struggle with this so I made her a mash Lydia!), loads of Live Yoghurt and a tiny bit of tomatoe. She even took 4 wobbly steps before sitting back down. Her eyes are now open (well most of the time!) but she is still sleeping a lot. Hopefully I continue to see more improvement as the day improves...fingers crossed. Lydia, in a few hours I am going to try her on the layer pellet with live yoghurt and a drop of honey...will let you know how I get on. May also add a spot of weetabix in there. I desperately need to give her energy and nutrition. She HATES the tuna and sardines I tried her with though!!! Although I am not surprised!!!

It is now 2pm and she seems to be going down hill again. Have left a message for the Vet to call me in the hope he can give her more glucose/steriods. I am completely at a loss here...

Oh no,I am sorry Amy,I was really encouraged by your previous post. Will keep my fingers crossed for you.

I have absolutey no clue what to do next. She was so perky this morning I really thought I'd cracked it. So disheartning. Maybe there is more wrong than I originally thought. This has been going on a week now.
I know chickens are not the best to rehabilitate but I have never had one last this long.

Sadly I am taking Dorothy to the vets today to be put to sleep  She is declining fast and I think a weeks battle is long enough for the poor little mite. Tried another round of tube in the stomach feeding plus steriods yesterday evening but this time there was no change. I think it is time to let her go.

She is buried in our orchard, right next to a newly planted Apple Tree...a lovely spot for her. Im sure she is now 'up there' playing with all my other past chickens having a great time!
Thanks Lydia for all your advice x
