Hi everyone, I need some help..............I have been trying to hatch some chinese painted quail chicks using an incubator, I noticed on tuesday evening (13th July) that one of the chicks had pipped it's egg, I have been checking the egg everyday to see if he has come out yet, but alas as of today Sunday 17th the little chick is still at exactly the same stage, they are still alive as I can see their little beak opening and shutting and them moving, but my worry is that it shouldn't be taking this long!? Can anybody shed any light on this matter please, and maybe some advice as to what I should do? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Paul

Hi, did you up the humidity ? do you know what the humidity is in the incy at the moment? If they are not hatching they could be too dry- can you notice if the chick is stuck to the egg? -a dry membrane? try adding some warm water to the incy to raise humidity -then keep the lid closed :) so that it stays humid. good luck,
regards, David :)

Thanks David, I shall do that.....I don't have a humidity reader in the incubator but I shall add some water to it then leave the lid closed and hope nature prevails and the little thing breaks free!

Hi, if the membrane is very dry- you can wet it with some warm water and kitchen towel and put it straight back in with the lid on- if it is stuck this will help free it- good luck, regards, David :)

the incubator hatch failed........again.......but the great news is I found 8 chicks in my aviary this morning with mum and dad!! Unfortunately one of the little chicks has splayed legs but all 8 eggs mum was sitting on have successfully hatched which i'm delighted with!

Sorry you had a bad hatch in your incy. Not a good year for me either.

Look forward to seeing pics of your other babies :D

After having a complete failure year with my incubator I have great news to report in that my female quail in my main aviary has now hatched two batches of very cute little chicks and is sat on another lot of eggs as we speak! 8 out of 8 eggs hatched the first time round but I was very unprepared and I only managed to get 2 of those to survive but they are now 8 weeks old and fully grown (1 male,1 female). The second time around 7 out of 8 eggs hatched and I moved the chicks straight into a brooder and now two weeks later I still have 7 little chicks progressing very nicely, I've just fed them their mealworm dinner. If my female hatches another lot before the year is out I shall be very proud and happy indeed!

Some advice re quails over the winter though please, will they be ok outside all winter? My breeding pair are in my main aviary and survived last winter in there, but I have another pair in a rabbit hutch and then the two first chicks and the next seven hopefully if they all reach adulthood are going into a small chicken house and run, will they be ok in there over the winter?

Any advice on how I can help my quails through the winter will be very much appreciated thank-you

ive found my quails always managed fine in an avery during winter, providing it was draught and moisture free.
although some nights i would put a hot water bottle under there bedding during extreme cold and they loved it.
hope this helps bb
