I hope someone reads this very soon, I am in a mad panic, its day 21 of my chicken eggs incubation, the humidity has only been at 30% and the eggs have been rocking from this a.m, I have just discovered that humidity should be at 65-70% what should I do they're all alive but I'm scared they'll die trying to hatch.

adding a wet sponge will increase the humidity or adding a tray of water but make sure the chicks cant drown in it! add marbles to make it safe. also dont open the incubator unless you have to as that wil also make it drop. hope all goes well

Thanks a lot I hope its not too late for the little chirpers they've been rocking all day!

Don't worry-some people (well me ) run incubator dry right through. . I get better results like that than upping the humidity anyway. If mine is VERY dry and I add a drop of water I don't do so till most have pipped anyway. Good luck!Ros

I agree with roz - I often forget to up my humidity and that's when I get the best results - having said that if you have a chick that's taking it's time -and looks like it's struggling - watch out that it doesn't get stuck - (cling flimed) you can give it a hand - many more chicks are killed by drowning in a too high humidity than are by too little - good luck - and I would down your humidity from 70 - that is far too much :-)17

Please sugest what I should set the humidity at now then? I am really concerned they rocked a lot yesterday and today there is very little if none, Do I need to help them :-)09 ?

I would defo. reduce humidity--BUT many would NOT agree, I think it depends on make of incubator , siting in house , geography , type/size of eggs Im afraid. I quickly learnt that the running instructions in mine were not suitable for my situation and ended up drowning (I am sure ) my first hatch in it --they take a few goes sometimes to suss out properly. May be reduce it then go out for the day or you will sit there looking at eggs , watching thermometer and humidity dials --they will hatch if they are going to ! I have eggs due yesterday that have been moving for 2 days , chirping away , the humidity in inccy is 32% and Im going out for the day --to another BHWT rescue -heard on the grapevine there are 800 (!!) chooks -I hope thats wrong!Ros

I have 3 little chicks the 3rd arrived last night. I still have 1 egg remaining which was my original rocking egg, What are the chances its died, I shook it and its still solid, still has an air sack, should I continue to hold out hop? I was very tempted to crack it. Is it normal it was rocking 5 days ago and now everything else but it has hatched. :D :-)09

Well there is a little sadness, the last chick had drowned, I think I over compensated when I realized the humidity should have been upped.

Now for the good news I have just set another 18 eggs today, practice makes perfect and all that jazz. Here we go again in 3 weeks time I'll be staring at the incy again. Thanks to all who advised.

I think I'll take the advice of running 45% humidity throughout. :-)17
