As people may know I live in Northern Cyprus and are bring up 12 Chickens for the first time.

I've been feeding then Chick Crumb, but now feel that I should move onto Growers Pellets. I went to the local feed supplier (they only speak Turkish) so I Googled Growers Pellets in Turkish and handed the paper over. He had no idea what I wanted and just showed me Chick Crumb. After about 10 minutes of hand signals try to show what I meant I left with nothing.

I'm feeding them at the moment (sorry there 2 months old) crumb, scrambled egg, cabbage, water melon, and meal worms as a treat.

Any ideas what they should be fed from now on . Corn ?

Chick crumb is very high in protein, ideal for the first few weeks, but I agree you need to move them on from this if they are more than 8weeks old. I would immediately stop the egg and mealworms until you find an alternative to crumb, as these are also extra high in protein. The maize in mixed corn is high in fattening carbohydrate, so again, not good as a main feed though fine in small quantities as treats. Maybe you could give them wheat, which is lower in protein, mixed with about 1/3 crumb to ensure they get the necessary vitamins etc, until you find a supplier of growers pellets? Do you know anyone who speaks Turkish and could write down for you the type of food you need, or maybe even come to the shop and translate?

You are aiming for about 15% protein Jllvehdist. I've read too much protein can be damaging and as Marigold says you are giving them far too much in that diet. Wheat is about 8% and you could mix it with a chick crumb as a wet mash. Here we can get growers/ rearer pellets but they also sell a finer ground mixed grain. If they are ranging over sufficient area, perhaps 100 square metres each, they will find sufficient insects for the protein and you can supplement with scattered wheat and perhaps a few sunflower seeds which are about 20% protein. It depends on their grazing environment and also the time of year. To digest any grain they must have grit in their diet. You need to start with small pieces and we sieve ours to get the little bits , although here you can buy chick grit.

Chick crumb here is only up to 5 weeks of age. The growers/ rearers pellets are very small so they can make the transition from crumb easily -something to watch out for if you do find any. We had problems in the UK and ended up grinding the pellets for a few weeks!

You could try a combo of wheat and millet with a small percentage of oats (they are warming which you don't want in that climate) and seeds as a homemade mash provided you can source them, cooked rice is low in protein and could be used as a pure carb to supplement this though sweetcorn is even lower in protein and probably preferable. As you are in N Cyprus I would imagine you would have no problem getting Bulgur, provided you pre soak it this would be a decent supplementary feed at about 12% protein 1% fat ,in Turkey it was about 1.5tl per kg, Pilavlik is the coarse stuff Koftelik is the fine.

Follow Up from Me:

Finally found someone that knew what I wanted. Ended up with a product called "TAVUK YEMI" looking at the bag it seems to have all the Protein, Fat etc that they need.
