I have just picked up 2 17 week (POL) lohmann Brown hybrid girls - they are so pretty! :D Decided to add these youngsters to my older ex-batts to get a nice mix of ages ..... I have put them in the coop whilst the other girls are free ranging. Mind you Jessica ( the BOSS) is making a right old noise in the garden having seen them! I was planning on leaving the newbies in the coop and then putting the others back in when it's bedtime, and then separating them all again in the morning - does this sound like a good idea or should i keep them separate? :-)05 The new girls are all vaccinated like the other girls!

Congratulations on your new pullets. They will lay well for the next couple of years, whilst the exbatts are becoming less prolific. Do you mean you are shutting them In the coop, or in the run, Fuzzyfelt? If you can't actually keep them in a separate run for a week or two, for quarantine reasons, maybe you could divide the run with netting or something they can see through, and put the new girls one side and the old girls the other side with access to the coop, as they may need to lay during the day and the young ones won't be ready for this yet. They will need to be out and about to feed and get exercise and find out the layout of the run, and also to get a look at the old girls through the protective netting for a while, as old hens, eg Jessica, can be really nasty to immature newbies.

Hi Marigold, The coop is directly above the run, so i put them into the coop with the pop hole open to the run; the run door is shut whilst the others free-range in the garden. The older girls are not laying at the moment after their moult ( combs still pale) so the nest boxes are blocked off - or Henrietta and Lucy roost in there (prolapsed Henrietta & Lucy who had the respiratory cold both get bullied),,, chicken politics huh
I plan to keep them separate in the day for a while but roost together at night...?

That sounds good, I didn't know how the exbatts were getting on, glad Henrietta and Lucy seem to be better now.
Yes, chicken politics - worse than doing Junior school playground duty!

The ex batts look gorgeous now! Lucy still sneezes but is otherwise ok - none of that gasping she used to do! Henrietta still has the prolapse but i cover it in violet so they don't peck it but i do know i will have to put her to sleep soon before they start laying again - she is otherwise happy so i have given her some free-ranging grace prior to her gaining her angel wings

Ahhhh, that's lovely ..... Fully feathered angel wings, I hope?

It's a good thing the new ones are fully vaccinated if Lucy is still sneezing, as she might still be infectious to new unprotected birds.
