I've had my 3 girls for two weeks and they're 20 weeks old today. Imagine the lovely surprise I got when I went to clean the coop this morning and found the very first egg! Wooohoo! A bit small and the shell quite soft - but hey, fine for a first attempt! :-)08 Then about an hour later while sweeping up I found another one right there on the path. I'm pretty certain they were laid by the same chook - a Light Sussex. When I opened them one was a perfect little egg and the other was mostly a fairly big yolk with very little white. Can anyone give me any info on this. I've never heard of such a thing but I'm a novice chicken keeper. :-)19

They will have been laid by different pullets or one was laid the day before. It's not possible for a hen under natural conditions to lay two within 24 hours. It's not unusual for them to lay small eggs at the beginning of lay and at the end of lay anf sometimes in between. The same applies to soft shelled and shells with a rough texture.
Won't be long before you are getting eggs of more normal size although they mainly lay small normal ones at first then bigger as the weeks go on.

Hi Chuck. Yeah that's what I thought - not possible! But (for various reasons) it would appear they were both laid by the same chook - and definitely not on different days. And now this morning I've found the same thing - 2 eggs up against each other right below where Madame Bountiful sleeps!!! :-)19

After making further investigations I've come to the conclusion that it IS possible. Just goes to show - we learn something new every day! I'm thinking of changing Daisy's name to Bunty (short for Lady Bountiful).

Yes it is possible,it happened to me few times allready.First time one of my Marans laid egg one after another, other day My silwer grey Dorking laid an egg went for a walk and after few minutes she run like maniac to the cop and third time my cross Dorking/GLPF laid 2 eggs in one day.And I know that for sura as each of them laing difrent eggs. The record for quantity in one day is 7.And I having chickens from last year,so this cant be to rare.If you have loads of choks you may not notice this as eggs may look very simular.

We've had two eggs from the same hen in the same day. We know this for certain because she was in isolation as a broody -Buff Orpington. Second egg was slightly smaller than the first. She was over 18 months old then.

Thanks folks that's really interesting. I knew that both eggs were from the same chook - despite being told 'it's not possible'. Only one egg today and its perfect (not like the soft shelled 'twins' from the previous two days). Ain't chickens fascinating
