turkey eggs

I didn't know the answer Carolyn but I'm wondering if you've found out yet?

My guess is they will come into lay in the spring but eggs are best hatched when they reach a good size which is probably in their second laying season. I don't keep Turkeys so I'm not sure of this but maybe someone who does can help....
 
No point in waiting until the second season Tim. Our standard turkey eggs are a good size from the first one, probably because the hens are usually hatched in May and come into lay the following March, so they are fully mature before they start. Commercially, first year hens are used for hatching egg production. I dont have any experience of collecting eggs from commercial turkeys but I would expect them to be capable of laying from the age of about 6 months, depending on the time of year. By "white turkeys", I assume you are referring to a commercial type?
 
sorry I did not reply before. They are from our local turkey, chicken, etc. breeder in Crete. Just white turkeys ... they don't do special types here ... very much the simple life! They have started laying now ... the first egg came at about 8 months old. The seasons are different here as our winter (now) is highs of 15-20 degrees and lows usually about 8 degrees occasionally dropping to 5, and sometimes as warm as 13. Thanks for your help.
 
Must be nice to have 20 degrees in January! I am surprised there are no coloured turkeys though. I suppose white ones reflect the heat better ;)
 
turkey hens begin to lay sumwhere around 7 to 9 months of age. They can lay summer or winter, but tend not to get broody till spring, they lay around and over a hundred eggs a year. The white turkeys carcass dresses better or looks cleaner, so there for more used for meat and eat varietys, the darker coloured turkeys leave behind black/brown pin feathers and occasionaly have mixed pigment on their skin.
