!!Too much info?!?!?

Hi folks,
Firstly happy monday morning to you... it's rubbish isn't it.. monday morning blues....
Anyhoo, you may or may not remember in one of my previous posts re: lack of eggs I mentioned that one of my birds laid 2 eggs then stopped for what I put down to an eye infection - I have been bathing and putting in eye drops sporadically for a while now but am losing the battle... having been onto the poultry diseases page have come across Myoclaxxxxxx??? Blah blah in the respiratory diseases section and it looks very much like this is what my little lady has.... She had the bubbly eye and sneezes (eyenow shut..) and is just generally rough... What would you advise as now I am nervous that this is the reason my other girls tend to be a bit sneezy..
I don't really have space to isolate her apart from bring her indoors but if I was to do that just now would that nowmean her being in till the weather heats up a bit?[ :-)19
 
Hello, if your bird/birds have a mycroplasma infection then you need a vet to prescribe antibiotics- some birds will recover well and others dont make it. If they recover they will carry it for life. If you search the forum for "mycroplasma" you will find more information.

Called vet and am well on my way to getting it treated...
Does this mean I could potentially have essentially poorly birds?? Should she have been treated for this before I bought her?
 
Hi, no , she could not have been treated before- they all carry it- when stressed, run down or off colour it can develop.

Just to let you know my poor little girl does indeed have mycoplasma... I have been given Baytril and syringes for the next 5 days but vet isn't holding out too much hope.. I also have it in liquid form to administer orally to the remaining 4 chickens just in case as one of my other birds has started to be a bit sneezy ....
Any hints or tips as to correctly hold a pretty large light sussex, really quite nervous about doing all of this as it's the first time i've had a poorly chook...
Also, I lost a baby pekin on 2nd Jan suddenly, could it have been this mycoplasma?? She wasn't displaying any of the symptoms but she was only 4 months old and Dot has (my poorly hen)looked afterher and her sister (the sneezy one) since coming out of heat lamps.....
Lastly!! I was hoping to add a couple more ladies to my collection this year - I am guessing I will not be able to do this now as I believe those who survive become carriers??
 
Hi Aileen, I wouldn't loose hope just yet. I added 4 new Pekins to my flock and they started sneezing and one in particular had crackly breath.(Didn't have the eye problem though). Went to the vet , he said it is probably Mycoplasma, treated them with Tylan (antibiotic) and all survived. None of the others got it. :D
It is true that if they did have that they will carry it for life, but it can be brought out by stress(ie moving them to a new home.) I would see what happens to the others b4 adding more, but apparently alot of flocks carry it and some breeds are more resistant than others. Stange thing with mine though.......they didn,t act really ill, they were still eating alot and moving around in the run. It would be difficult to know what killed the baby Pekin, especially as she didn,t display same symptoms. As for handling the Sussex it would probably be easier for someone to hold her whilst you administer the medicine. It probably would be easier to pick her off the perch when the birds go to roost as they are a lot calmer then. Pick her up, holding down her wings so she can't flap as that stresses them. Hope this helps, though I am no expert, its just what I have picked up from here and from handling my own birds. Keep us all posted.

I have been putting drops in for ages now thinking it was an eye infection.... it was on the poultry diseases section I happened across bubbly eyes... so the Myco I would imagine has got a pretty firm grip of her now... the bubbly eye is now shut completely...
I'm a bit peeved at my vet as he saw her months ago and told me to buy eye drops,on doing further reading the bubbly eyes is an absolute give away for myco.... I think I am just looking for someone to blame as if I lose Dottie hen that will mean I have lost 2 in less than a fortnight and its really bloody hard as they're my babies (getting all female and teary here....Think I need to toughen up!!)
Will keep you posted... meantime you wouldn't be able to advise on oral administrstion to a sizeable sussex who doesn't like being handled?!?!?! :-)09
 
Hi Aileen, just edited last post to give suggestions. I know it can be disheartening, but as with most things in life you learn as you go along. Like you, I would also be more careful where I buy my birds in future. Got to go now as I'm going out for a drink and an Indian.

Mmmmmmmm dunno.....
My big lady Sussex stopped sneezing today. She was really easy after all my stressing, my lovely gentle giant!
My baby pekin is still sneezing but bright as a button so will persevere.
But poor Dotty hen... she seems brighter in herself but is still v.v. poorly. Her good eye seems to be getting better but am gonna have to admit defeat on the other one so she is constantly "lopsided" staring at the ground with her good eye... really struggling with the internal debate of what's actually best for her..... giving her till Wednesday by then she will have been on Baytril twice daily for a week (was supposed to be injecting but she so skinny at the minute I couldn't find a fat bit to stab her with... poor wee soul)
