I've just been clipping the toenails on my girls and found that Nutmeg, the 2-year-old Legbar had grown enormously long ones, as had Saffron, the 1-year-old Leghorn hybrid. The 1-year- old Columbian Blacktail hybrid had hardly grown anything, and Marigold, the 2-year-old Sussex, also had only a little growth.
So I'm wondering whether birds with Leghorn genes are more likely to grow long nails much faster than other breeds?
Also, Marigold and Nutmeg, the Legbar, have both grown long stiff spurs, not sharp at the end, although neither of them has shown any male characteristics apart from this. Is this just part of the ageing process? The one- year-old hybrids have no spurs at all. And I can't remember whether Marigold and Nurmeg had them when they were younger.
