I went to pick up the eggs today and there was a tiny little dark brown egg in the middle of one of the nesting boxes.... It was literally about 1 1/2 inches in height. We do have bantams and I have had their eggs before but they are a cream colour this is dark brown darker than any of my Maran eggs I have had. Could it be a silkie or a bantam starting to lay or is there any way a wild bird could have come into their nshed and flew into the nesting box or am I just being dramatic!...... ;-)

Thanks all

Xx

Sounds like a "wind egg" or other affectionate terms are "fart eggs" and "witches eggs" :D
Basically it is where no yolk is present, so a very small egg is laid...or a minute foreign object has irritated the reproductive tract stimulating a yolkless egg. Nothing to worry about and fairly common in young hens coming into their first season of lay.

G'wan and crack it open! :D

That is so interesting!!.... Thanks so much for the reply..... I had visions of a cuckoo flying in when no one was looking to leave the egg in their nest.... I love the idea of that but I guess yours is realistic but still kind of cool!! Thanks again I will let you know when I crack it open....

Xx

The smallest one we've had was 30 grammes I think -looked a lot smaller than that mind. We had about 3 in a fortnight from the same group of pullets and no more since. None of ours had yolks in.

Trust you to have weighed it Chris! :D

I haven't had a "wind egg" from mine in years and years, but had 2 or 3 this season. One had another smally inside. Not sure about this one :D
