It's the first time for me . Tilly was only 9 months old and was fine yesterday evening. This morning she was in the nest box when I went to work, I thought she was laying although she looked a bit fluffed up so I wondered if she'd gone broody. When my son got home from college at about 4 she was still there so he lifted her out to see if she'd feed. She was not happy, droopy wings and kept squatting and wouldn't eat. He got our lovely chicken keeping neighbour, she could feel a compacted crop so syringed some olive oil down. When I got home my son said Tilly seemed brighter and the crop felt less hard. We left her in a comfy box in a spare bedroom, but she was dead when I checked on her later.
I'm really quite tearful, poor little thing but at least she's not suffering now and it was quick. My neighbour said she could also see something hanging out of her vent, and wondered about a prolapse although she didn't think Tilly was egg bound.
I just hope it was something physical and not catching, the other three were ok when they went to bed.
