I've just found that one of my girls has a tick attached to her ear. It's about 2mm long and a bluey-grey colour. Is there a recommended method of tick removal and/or killing for chikens? I presume (always dangerous) that if I just pull it off the tick head will be left behind and it will get infected.

Any help much appreciated, as always.

A tiny dab of liquid Frontline on a cotton bud should do the trick, it will then die and eventually drop off, and the Frontline will only be on the tick and not the hen herself, so probably no egg withdrawal problems. Or you could use a tick hook, twisting gently to unplug the tick rather than pulling it off. You'd probably need a second person to hold her for you if possible. Of course she may have other ticks elsewhere, hidden under her feathers, quite a problem finding them.
I've never noticed any ticks on my hens, probably because they're kept in a covered run with no access to long grass and hedges etc, but on our dogs, before the invention of spot-on treatments such as Advantix that prevent ticks as well as fleas, I used the methods above. Or you could try simply coating the tick with Vaseline - a bit messy on the feathers and would attract dust etc but would help to smother the tick so it couldn't breathe and should die.

I would go for the tick hook, trying to kill the tick before removing it can cause it to regurgitate and increases the chance of infection.

We use a pair of tweezers on ticks Colin. Carefully locate them over the head only and squeeze gently, applying a very gentle pulling motion at the same time. The tick will release its grip and can be pulled away. Very important none of it is left behind. I'd dab on some antiseptic cream onto the wound afterwards.

We had a dead sparrow in the enclosure yesterday. It had a huge brown tick buried into its throat.

Thanks, Chris... but tick hook is bought and ready to swing into action when MrsB gets home to hold the chook. I'll report back on its efficacity after the deed is done. Good idea about the antiseptic... bad news about the sparrow!

OK... so this morning there's no tick on her ear. I would assume it's full up and has gone away to lie down and sleep it off before setting out for another meal. I suppose one of the other chicks could've scoffed it as it was easily visible. Ho-hum.
