I'm back on the 'no-egg' mystery! Its only because I'm intrigued as to why one hen doesn't lay, no other reason, she'll stay no matter what :D

I have read that the colour of a hens ears indicates the colour of her eggs. Is this correct?
I get a white, a large brown, a small brown & a large beige egg.

In trying to establish which of my lttle mixed flock lays which egg & which one isn't layinbg any, I was confident in thinking my RIR x was the layer of the beige (is it called Pink?) egg (her ears are red with a tiny whiter bit in the middle) & it was my cukoo maran who wasn't laying.

Yesterday, being at home I was able to keep popping out to see them. They conveniently laid at nice intervals  - I'd got it all wrong :? The 2 marans laid & the RIR hybrid, & my campine (white egg) So that means its the Lt Sussex not laying. I saw all the others in the nesting box at various times of the day & saw which egg she'd laid.

That means I guess the cukoo maran is not a pure breed (even though she was sold as one), she laid the pink :o & she has red rears :? & marans have a reputaion for laying big brown eggs! A mystery deepens. Interesting though, well it is to me

Hi, they don't all lay everyday- you need to check if the l/sussex is laying -try to keep an eye on her and see if you can catch her laying- then that would make them all laying :D Ear lobes are not necessarily correct- silkies should have blue ear lobes but dont lay blue eggs! It is normally the case that white ear lobes lay white eggs- that is the only one that is nearly true- though there are some that don't conform-Marsh Daisy- tinted eggs white ear lobes being one :)

Thank you Davidd, another myth bites the dust  I read in one of my books about the ear lobes.

I've been keeping a close eye on the egg laying for the last 6 weeks & someone isn't keeping to her end of the bargain ;)

Another question, do you know if each hen always lays the same shape egg? Of the 4 eggs I get, each one is very individual in colour, size & shape, & always the same (eg.the pink one is large with a very pointy end) I know young chooks (& older ones possibly) lay different sizes but I mean once they mature.

Thank you, in the scheme of things a very insignificant dilema but one day it might be useful to be able to identify them :D

Hello, yes, you can , once you know, identify which hen laid which egg- they do lay the "same" egg each time- like you said, once mature you should be able to tell who laid what just by looking at their eggs.
regards, David :)
