Got a newsletter today from the Chicken Vet about parasites and what not. Great info! My vet friend turned me on to it. The website is fab, is run by chicken vets! has a shop and contact directly to well established chicken vets! http://www.chickenvet.co.uk/

I can't find a direct link to the newsletter, I think you have to become a registered member to view it! I will post up some good parts of it on here in a minute. But the registration is only £15 and you get access to loads of good stuff and help! Great stuff. :D

via The Chicken Vet- "Chickens can also suffer from Lice (Menophon Gallinae)
which are golden in colour and are approximately 1-3mm in
length. These lice are relatively fast moving and are often
observed around the vent or under the wings. The lice bite
the chicken and feed of its skin and the fluid which oozes
from the damaged skin. Low levels of lice only cause mild
irritation but large numbers lead to weight loss, restlessness
and a reduction in the numbers of eggs laid. The lice lay their
eggs (nits) which are white and are often best seen at the
base of the feathers around the vent. They tend to rapidly
increase in number around the autumn and winter. They only
live a few days when off a chicken hence they are often
transmitted by direct contact. The best way to treat them is
to either use Ivermectin 1% drops or for low burdens use
Diamatacious earth."

Ah ha!!! These could be the culprits that are making my girls suffer!!

Brilliant post, thanks Steph!

Also, I can highly recommend the Chicken Vet. A few weeks ago I ordered a load of stuff from them including some vitamins. When the vitamins arrived they only had a month left out of a two year shelf life. I pointed this out to TCV and they very quickly sent me some more with the full two year shelf life! Very pleased!

I have also pointed out that is unfair for people who purchase from their shop to have to ring the premium rate helpline if they have a query with their order...I think this is being looked into (incidentally, I contacted them through their Facebook page)

Are you actually allowed to cross post without permission from The Chicken Vet?
