Thanks so much to everyone who sent along advice concerning my red mite problem recently. The hens came with an old hen house that turned out to be full of the little blighters .. They were draining my poor hens and the cockerel of blood. I had been assured that the hen house had been power washed etc etc so I let down my guard. Dumb!

I am now the proud owner of a new Green Frog hen house and the girls are in a completely new run a little distance from the old area.

And today Winifred laid her first egg in her new home.

The hens have now been thoroughly dusted twice with powder and just look so much better.

I am very glad of all the advice and help you more experience poultry owners have given me!

Glad you're all sorted Liz and the hens are happy. I have also been assured that my secondhand coop has been disinfected - the previous owner admitted to redmite. It's dismantled now awaiting a couple fo coats of creosote. See the thread "When is a bargain not a bargain"

Very lucky hens, Hector, to have been rescued by someone prepared to go the distance to give them such a happy and healthy new life. Good for Winifred, I hope that's the first egg of many they will give you by way of thanks.

Glad you have found a solution that works for you, Winifred is obviously very happy already! Such a shame that that your early days with chicken keeping were marred by such an bad experience with redmite.

LOL! Hectorshome was from a donkey I used to own called unsurprisingly Hector!! We have a way to go with the new additions as are still treating scaly leg but seeing them happy and healthier is all the reward I want ;-)

Pleased to hear it Hectorshome. Green Frog gets the best reviews on forums. So if they ban creosote I'll need at least half a dozen -and a lottery win to pay for them!
