i need to make a small temerary coop for my wee little millfluer dutch bantams and was wandering if you guys had any idea what i could use { dont have any sheets of wood } is there anything esle i could use that would be suitable ??

i can make a house { done before but no longer have pics } out of the wooden rasied beds i have that are hinged in each corner so you can close them together and lay flat and also they stack on top of each other to make them any height you want as the coners have metal clips but they are quite big and i only want something small and the thing is with the last house i had big trouble keeping it dry from the floor up as no matter what i did they got wet inside so any body got any wacky ideas of what i could build and use .

We use old hot water header tanks from lofts , but as I'm a plumber we have a few lying around. Could try a cardboard box covered in plastic sheet outside and weighed down with a few bricks. Depends how temporary you need Karminski?

i have been on freecycle and i cant get on with that site no matter what it drives me crazy trying to work it out , and i was thinking of the cardboard box idea as i have enough odd sizes of onduline which i can use as a good roof over it only need something for about a month as i am going to build some more houses and a broody house :D

You can use old wooden pallets, they usually around peoples front gardens wherewer you can find builders.

Even better Chris old bottom kitchen unit with the door can be perfect accomodation for a chicken,my friend had used this idea-I forgot about it until your post:)

i can get any size pallets from work have made one up out of those before hehehehe even i forgot about using them dohhhhhhhhhh thankyou for reminding me and i do like the kitchen unit idea pretty much no where for mites to hide either :D :D :D , tonight i have converted the nest boxes attached to the house for them and wedge a perch at an angle for them its only about 2 inches of the floor but its better then nothing .glad i mentioned soemthing now got plans in my head already and i wil be watching out for skips now  what does it matter what its made of as long as its dry and draught proof

My OH had the idea of using a large dustbin as a coop for temporary house while creosoting after we found redmite in our main coop last year ;) it worked well!

have you got any pics if it ?? i suppose its a bit like using a compost bin i have seen pics of those being converted .

Hi Karminski,

Don't know where you live but I'm having a new kitchen fitted & have an old cupboard going spare!!

I used part of an old office desk when I needed a temp home once. I stood it up on bricks to keep it off the ground. It was an old wooden desk with a cupboard & drawers someone was throwing out. I took the drawers out & used one inside as the nest box! Worked well & free!!

If you have access to them, a temporary run can be made by stacking breeze blocks to create two run sides and run ends, then using a sheet of tin or plastic to cover one end for shelter weighted down with bricks, blocks or logs, and creating an open top with a length of Garden fencing netting of either plastic or wire, again weighted with blocks or bricks along it's edges. access can be gained through the weighted 'lid'.
Some fanciers construct these type of runs inside sheds, garages or outbuildings, running against the walls, using the structure walls as run sides and saving on breeze blocks. For indoor situations with concrete floors, feed sacks can be laid down as insulation against the cold floor, with a layer of shavings on the top as litter.

thanks for the offer lucy but its a bit far for me to come for somethig like that , i can get old desks like what your saying from work as 1 - we are having a clear out , 2 - one of the guys does office clearances every few months or so and i have been looking at things like that when they are ready to dump thinking could i convert that into a house :-)05 . my rabbit hutch is free now as 1 poorly bird picked up but the other i had p.t.s yesterday but i really want that kept for hatching and quantine only as i am going to hatch some lavendar pekins this year its one breed i do want .going to have a good nose around work tomorrow and see what i can get my hands on

Two things to mention Karminski. Driving through town today and saw a pile of stuff on the pavement from a house refurbishment that could be used to make coops from. Immediately thought of you!

Saw the lavender pekins on Countryfile last night. Aren't they delightful! But what are you going to do with the cockerels that hatch?

umm cull them :( unless my friend will have them shes the one who breeds all fancy things thats who i got my little wee dutch milles from only want to get 6 eggs so i might be lucky and have all females umm do be daft } .every time i drive past a skip i am always looking to see if theres anything i can get but what about dustbins / or waterbutts with the top cut of and replaced with onduline with air holes at the top all the way round i have seen converted compost bins online which look pretty good but they already have the opening at the bottom where as with a dustbin/ waterbutt i would have to cut that which is fine but with them being curved how would i add a doorway :-)05 :-)05 .
