When I say Bottom I mean our pet Buff Orpington Cock, not the location of the feather.

He is asleep on mummy bird's lap at the moment. Because we have lost our top hen he gets preened while he is there. I was shown a new blue (chicken speak for grey) feather about two inches long in his saddle area. It stuck out like a sore thumb and I suggested it wasn't his, but one picked up from the Blue Orpingtons he 'plays' with. But it was actually rooted in him, so we pulled a fair bit harder and it finally came out. The root wasn't bloody, so it certainly wasn't his feather, but somehow it had stuck in the side of him and actually grown into the skin. Has anyone seen this before?

I love your title for this post Chris! Sorry, but I haven't got any suggestions.

Poor Bottom! That wasn't a very nice thing to say about him Foxy  :-)10

The Bottom to which I hope you refer Marigold is on one of the 'Mobile Coops'; he's with some of his girls. But I guess you would rather see one of him asleep on mummy bird's lap. I'll see about attaching one.

Foxy, he was a bit odd, but that was because of the moult. He's completely back to normal now and pecking at our legs when he wants to be picked up for a cuddle. He's alseep at the moment in his bed, which is getting a bit lumpy, so he now spends a few minutes moving the stuffing around with his beak to get it into a comfortable shape first. We'll have to get him a new one.

Sorry to get back to the thread but no-one, except Sue, has replied to my question. And I agree with Chuck.

Well, if you MUST put a title like that, what do you expect, Chris?
Sorry, like Sue, have no sensible contribution to make to the feather question, but am still hoping for pic.....

Yes, come one Chris, we are all still waiting for the photo of your Bottom! Oh, and the feather in it!

Sorry for the delay. The feather has been removed and I'm a bit short of time at the moment. Rotorvator exhaust went today and frightened all the chickens no end! So need to repair it as parts no longer available. Oh, and Bottom's handsome son Basil needed his behind washing and blow dry. Bit of a rush as starting to put things in place for our move in September and the house isn't finished yet!

In that case Chris, perhaps when you have more time you could put a photo of Bottom and his handsome son Basil on here (when he's got a clean Bottom of course!)

I can do that Sue but it would have to be two photos. Can never let them get closer than a metre and then only if there are two fences between them!

We'll have to get to the Bottom of all this with your cock....... A strange Feather out at an angle ? Sounds like Cock and bullfeather to me :-)10

Let's see the pics ! Tell me you took some before removing it ?!

Oh dear.. Reb is back! :D :D

On a serious note..( I now feel completely chastised over my lack of contribution to the thread... :D ) It would be a good idea to examine a few feathers to check there is nothing amiss, redness or roughness at the base of the folicle
