My chickens keep getting robbed of their food by a load of STARLINGs, how can i stop other birds eating all the chicken food?, i am going through more than double the amount normally given to the chickens!!
I keep my feeders inside the houses, hanging from the roof of the house.
You could consider a small plastic bird of prey to sit there and scare them off but it might need moving around from time to time. You can buy them from the shooting shops as they sell them for crow shooting (crows attack them and then Bang!)
Not only are you losing food but risking them carrying disease in too.
At night I cover the food up. I put a owl near the food and I got a eagle that flaps its wings when the wind blows. The birds get used to them after a while. When summer comes I might buy a few rubber rattlesnakes. If you don't put more food than your chickens need then you wont have the problem because the food will be eaten.
I was going to suggest a plastic owl but was beaten to it.
My feeders are kept in the shelters I made so they're not quite in the open.
If the starlings are that much of a problem then maybe it's worth giving them a fast lead injection. I don't think they're listed as vermin anymore but I wouldn't hesitate to pop them off if they were muscling in on my hens food.
