Hi. my cockerel is fimding it hard to crow. his voice is husky. last week I change the bedding from straw to a fine cut straw bedding from my local supplier. Could this be the problem.
Thanks
Andy.

Andy,
Honestly, without any symptoms I can't see where a change in bedding would make a difference. He's not sneezing or having any drainage from his eyes or nostrils?

It could be the dust in the straw or more probably fungal spores in the straw Andya9. We have had severe respiratory infections develop caused by fungal spores. The symptoms were as you describe. Initially a husky voice with no nasal or eye discharge. Then developing into an inability to crow and raspy, wheezy breathing. My advice is to ensure you have adequate ventilation in the coop at night and change the bedding to something you can be sure is properly dried, like Aubiose (hemp stems) or quality wood shavings.

Have a good look inside and the roof of his mouth, his throat with a small strong torch or in good light. Check the mucous membranes look pink and healthy. Especially look for any sores, yellow or black plaques.

Has he been well in himself? Moulting? Or any minor illness recently.

He may be suffering from a subclinical illness which has become symptomatic such as canker (trichomoniasis) which can often affect crowing but without much outward symptoms otherwise.Bedding is more likely to cause sneezing through irritation than a problem with crowing.
