OH here, I was at our local Essex Wildlife Trust reserve helping out as they were a bit short handed, and a woman came in and asked about a hedgehog feeder.
Well there was one for sale, new type just in, a nice raised mesh tray in which two little removable dishes sit and a nice perspex dome over it to keep the rain off. Little bit OTT. The woman looked at it turned it around, picked up box then said "why hasn't it got a light with it"
" A light?"
"Well if it hasn't got a light the hedgehog wont be able to see the food, I want one with a light"
"hedgehogs are nocturnal, they don't need a light they will be able to see and smell the food"
" no they aren't, they come out at night, you should know that working on a nature reserve"
Everyone in the office was struggling not to laugh, and I was struggling to remember if it could possibly be the same person who wanted to buy a hedgehog house and was upset because it didn't have a hedgehog inside it a few years ago, in spite of the box being shrink wrapped.
Anyway she left to try elsewhere

Devolving back to primitive pond life.
At the orchid festival at Kew on Sunday, one woman said in a loud voice to her friend "do you think they are real or plastic"
Two other women had opened the doors to the hot house and were leaning against them talking when a member of staff asked them to shut the doors to keep the heat in. (there are notices on the door to that effect) they said it was too hot in there, thats why they had the doors open, and if they made it cooler it would be so much better.
After the last week I was quite enjoying the tropical warmth and the orchids were amazing

It's not that people don't know stuff that bothers me. It's that they are proud of not knowing stuff and regard the rest of us as nerds. Thank you neo liberal educational values!

Not everyone agrees with you, even if they went to Eton. Here's a nice clip of Michael Gove claiming 'the people have had enough of experts.' Though it must make them easier for politicians to hoodwink.

Watching the full clip I though it was fair comment. If someone describing themselves as an expert consistently produces forecasts that are proved to be glaringly wide of the mark then only fools will continue to put any stock in what they have to say. A good example of this would be the IMF and Treasury economists, who you wouldn't trust to forecast what the global economy would do in the next minute let alone the next five years.

Dare I say,
'H&S gone mad' - 'red tape' -
Cladding!
It suits commerce nicely to dumb down and it suits politicians to whistle a popular tune, and it suits people to enjoy a jibe.
And what did the 'expert' or the 'scientist' actually say? It's unlikely to be repeated in the media with any of the finer nuances neseccery to measure it's place or worth in the whole. But then if we all engaged with everything nothing would get done and we'd all have a splitting headache (and be boring to boot!)

Just heard Baroness Tanni Grey Thomson speaking. She was talking about her Paralympic days and then went onto her marathon runs. She said that when you do a wheelchair marathon you have to carry spares and a repair kit for the wheels which you have to do yourself. She had a problem and stopped by a St Johns ambulance station and couldn't cut a piece of tape to do a repair so she asked the St John's man for a pair of scissors and he told her he couldn't let her use them as she hadn't done the safety course on how to use them properly. talk about H & S gone mad
