I have 4 hens (3 ex batts and one much smaller hen-no idea what she is, got her given to me by family who don't have a clue either lol)

Anyway, it's the smaller hen I am concerned about. A few weeks ago (6 or 7wks probably) I treated them for coccidiosis as that was what they seemed to have from looking at google, and talking to a local feed and treatment store. They were all treated and got well again pretty quickly. Now the smaller one has odd poo, it's quite green with lots of white and it is hanging around the feathers below her bottom. Her bottom is bald, she plucked the feathers, I'm guessing to keep cool and she looked like something was trying to come out but there's nothing there, she is quite lethargic, has spent a lot of time with her eyes closed. She is in a separate pen but escaped on Saturday whilst I was out and the others pecked her a bit but nothing serious, it all soon cleared up. I'm just worried about what is wrong with her, she is my fave of all the girls and she seems to have one problem after another :( I thought this chicken keeping malarky would be a joy but it's becoming as much hard work as looking after my children and I can't always divide my time to suit their needs.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Yes they have been checked for lice. Sadly the sick one died yesterday, very quickly, I checked on her while dinner was cooking and she died soon after, I checked her after dinner and she'd died. She was about 11m/1 year old

Sounds like there was something going on inside. I think you did all you could.

Its the downside of chicken keeping I'm afraid :( And often there really isn't much to be done when they get that sick. Even trips to the vet can often prove ineffective and costly once they reach the point of being visibly ill like that. I've found over the years that many of the tried and tested home remedys work better than medical ones but I really don't think she could have been saved from what you described. You did your best for her, thats the important thing for you to remember :)
