So what do quail eat?

@Icemaiden Ooh, I’m a bit worried that might be a potentially incriminating question so I shall word this carefully..

From bumble bee sized fluff ball until they learn to sing I give them..

25% teff
25% mealworms *
13% hulled cannabis seeds
10% hulled sunflower seeds
5% moringa
5% sea buckthorn berries
5% turmeric
3% sun dried oyster mushrooms
3% nutritional yeast
3% broken cell wall chlorella
1% sea spaghetti
1% black pepper
1% Himalayan salt

Then the same ingredients but in different quantities to reduce the protein a bit..

40% teff
12% mealworms *
12% hulled cannabis seeds
10% hulled sunflower seeds
5% moringa
5% sea buckthorn berries
5% turmeric
3% sun dried oyster mushrooms
3% nutritional yeast
2% broken cell wall chlorella
1% sea spaghetti
1% black pepper
1% Himalayan salt

It smells good enough to eat, like spiced garibaldi biscuits and the eggs are incredible, I’ve never tasted anything like it.

They do a scratchy feet thing when they eat it which I think is a sign of approval but who knows?

They also get worms from my bin for a treat, partly for the nutritional value and probiotics but mostly because it’s so much fun to give all the chicks one each and watch them run frantically away from each other until they eventually realise everyone else has one and no one’s chasing them.

Once a month they all get verm-x which I have to hide in lots of kefir or they won’t drink it, it’s got garlic and all sorts of other stuff in I don’t think they’re especially fond of.

And then it’s just 2% ACV in their water and some crushed oyster shell. They live on a bedding of river sand and spend most of the day eating that, it’s much cheaper than the other bits so fine by me.

I’ll take some pics of the little one’s when they wake up, I think they’re about 2 weeks old now, they grow so quick, they’re pretty good flyers already.

*dried weight after correcting for moisture content. Obviously I feed them fresh, honest defra.
