Morning all,

One of my chooks is sneezing a little, I've noticed it for a few days & to start with didn't think it was anything to worry about. Still don't think its bad as she's perfectly OK in every other way but don't want to take chances so just wondered if anyone had any tips on treatment.

Somewhere on here I've read a tip for treating sneezing/ respiratory problems but can't find it.
Would be grateful for the info again,

Many Thanks

--need to exclude significant respiratory infection such as Myco. etc. ???runny eye, cloudy eye, swelling side face/eye , can feel/hear wheeze or rattly chest if you put ear to back of chest-if unsure I would get vet check as can spread quickly in flock and needs antibiotic treatment-------having said that it could be just an irritation/minor sneeze! I think it is important to assess the generally state of bird ie is she 'ill' or 'well' .Good luck, Ros

Thanks for your reply Ros,
She doesn't have any other signs of illness, only the sneezing. Why I'm concerened & want to nip it in the bud is because I've had a couple of respiratory infections before & it was touch & go as to whether she'd get better. She did but not after a trip to Vet & anti-biotics & lots of heartache. Trying to administer pills to a chook twice a day isn't easy for a novice!!!

Any other suggestions that I could try?

It could be a straight forward cold or more complicated. As Ros says, you really need to keep a close eye for other symptoms.

If your flock have had mycoplasma / respiratory disease in the past, they will still be carriers so you would need to keep the immune system as strong as possible and avoid stressing your birds. The secondary infection of mycoplasma is the wheezing / sneezing / rattly breathing and this can be treated with antibiotics such as Tylan or Baytril. Both are soluble in water but there is an injection your vet can give of Tylan if the bird is really bad.
