Hi everyone,
Can anyone tell me please, do Silkies come in bantam and LF varieties?
I have two pure white Silkies, one tiny size, about 18 months old, and the other about 18 - 20 weeks, twice the size of her, larger than two LC Pekins of the same age.
Question is, is Moppet extra tiny, or is the other one very large?
Any replies appreciated, many thanks.
 
Yes they do come in both sizes - sounds as if you've got one of each. The LF version is quite small compared to other LF, eg Sussex, but definitely bigger than the bantams.

many thanks, I spoke to someone else who said he thought there was just one sort of Silkie, bantam.
Anybody out there who wants a most beautiful POL LF Silkie, very ladylike and growing?

My granddaughters are coming around tomorrow afternoon, and being 8 and 10, I'm sure they could do photos........ will ask them anyway.
I'm sure it (she) is not a chap in disguise as I have played that Silkie game before.

Have a look at the Forum thread 'Help with posting photos' in the Photos of Chickens section on the Board Index above. I found this very helpful. Give it a try, if i can do it, anybody can! If you still can't quite work it out, your granddaughters might find the notes helpful also.

somehow I managed to lose your message before I had finished replying to it.
I've gone back to GCF, and seen the message about ears and comb; ears blue, coat white, and everything else black!! She really is a beauty. I don't know where you are in the country or what to suggest. I will ask my granddaughters to do a photo for you, and send it.
We all love her to bits, and I'm not sure I really want to part with her, it was just that as she has started to grow - she is outgrowing the two Pekins she is with, I was in a bit of shock as to what to do with her and where to put her, and then today she is confirmed as LF.

Maybe you don't really need to part with her, Valerie? So long as they all get on together, there should be no problem if she's a bit bigger than the Pekins, she won't get enormous. She will need the same sort of care as Pekins and your Silkie bantam do in wet winter weather. And it would possibly be a bit difficult for her to have to go somewhere else and fit in to a new group as a single newbie.
 
---I agree with Marigold, most L/F silkies really are not big. When they are not breeding my ' all sized ' birds all run about together quite happily , boys ,girls banties to brahma. :D Ros

sorry, did not do photo, simply did not get around to it.
We seriouly discussed getting rid of Poppet, but the girls were quite excited when they realised she was goingto be an even bigger girl, and she excelled herself by just sitting with us and being cuddled - so for the moment, re-housing is the only issue. She certainly seems to have a lovely temperament, calm and chatty and very friendly.

meant to say at some point my bantam Silkie, is one of the maddest hens ever, she is actually white, but to see her most of the time you would never know it.
She goes against all the Silkie rules, loves the rain, purposely goes out in it, and the mud, unless there is a prolonged dry spell, she is always dirty. I did not think she would live long as she has this love of mud and damp and thought she would succcumb to it. I used to dry her off with a towel when I could, but gave up!!.

Maybe think she's a duck? :mrgreen: Do you have any ducks?-very unusual for chicken to like rain-mine run for cover as soon as 1 drop fall on them :lol:
