Hi my 18 month old speckledy hen went into moult and looked awful but after some tonic and love she has her feathers back but she does not join in with the others and has gone silent, She looks like she is trying to make a noise but nothing comes out. What could it be and what can i do to help her? Thank you.

Going silent is an early sign of illness. If she is trying to speak it must be a throat infection or some obstruction. What are her poos like? Is she eating properly? Crop full at night and empty in the morning? Has she been wormed with Flubenvet in the last 6 months?

Visit to an experienced chicken vet may be in order here.

Agree with Chrismahon, sounds like an underlying problem, possibly respiratory

Thanks for the replies, I will check her poo tomorrow. I have given her Flubenvet for last 6 days. What else can I do?

Finish the Flubenvet course, so full 7 days. She may have had bad worms and that is having an effect on her as they give off toxins as they die. Check her breathing is OK; not raspy or rattly as that would indicate possible respiratory infection. If she doen't pick up a few days after the course has finished or if her poos are runny (should be solid at day 6) or green (infection) or breathing is bad it's off to the vets I think.

But is she just quiet or does she actually look ill. If she's lively and in all other respects presents as a healthy hen, I'd leave alone and monitor for a few days.
