Sickly Brahma Rooster

Hi Everyone,

Our 4 year old Brahma Rooster started feeling unwell 2 days ago now. He has been wormed with the rest of the Flock in May with Flubenvet, I have added some more Flubenvet to the feed the same day He looked poorly just in case. His droppings are liquid, yellowish with white in, He's still eating and drinking though not much, hasn't crowed since, eyes look really sleepy and the smell in the coop is awful. He's on His own so no worries about the rest of the Flock getting sick. Have called the Vet and waiting for return phone call. Any ideas or help on what it may be? Thank you in advance,

Hi David,

Yes, He's on Baytril now 10mls per day for 7 days, just hope He makes it though as He's looking really awful, poor guy, He's still drinking water and moving around, the top of His comb looks really dark now, don't know it that helps with a possible diagnosis? Thanx David,

Hope he is going to be ok siobhan - Brahma cockerels are such softies - will keep everything crossed :(
 
Hi, at four years old and being a large bird- he could be suffering heart failure- hopefully it's not that- and the antibiotics will perk him up :) Here's too a speedy recovery!

Thanx Anne and David. Hope it's not heart failure, He actually looks a wee bit perkier now since I administered the Baytril, will keep U informed, Thanx again for the help, as U say Anne He's a big softy (Charlie) I'd Miss Him as He was our 1st Rooster.

Have just hatched some Brahmas Siobhan - they are 7 weeks old now and I have to say I absolutely adore them. I have others that I have hatched but these Brahmas are so friendly - one of them is a gold cockerel (Jack) and he walks up to me and stands waiting to be picked up. I actually wanted a gold Brahma cockerel because I have heard they are so good natured so I am so pleased. Do keep us informed and I will be thinking about you - they are 'little people ' and it really hurts when they arent well .
 
It is very hard to identify some poultry diseases. Baytril will have been administered as a general broad spectrum antibiotic I would imagine. Basically this kills bacteria in the body, which can be part of the disease - so whatever it is, with luck, this will help him.

Unfortunately, antibiotics kill good bacteria as well as bad - so be sure to give him a vitamin suppliment and lots of fresh greens to help build him up again. ACV is a very good all round tonic that should help him with his recovery.

Well done for isolating him - so many people forget to do this :?

Just an update on Charles our Brahma Rooster, we had added ACV to His drinking water Tim, we give our Flock ACV in the water once weekly. Anyway He was in very bad shape when Ian came Home from work just now so He culled Him as He really was in a bad way, thank you everyone for all your advice and kind words, I'm going to miss Him as He was our 1st Rooster but on the bright side of things He'll live on in His 2 Sons and 3 Daughters. One of His Sons (Harry) is the spitting image of Him colour wise and William is His size but different colour totally. RIP Charles.

Oh dear, I'm sorry to hear that Siobhan but it sounds like you made the right decision. At least he didn't suffer.

Thanx Tim, it's never easy to make that decision and we've had to make it a few times over the past few years, But as all us Animal Guardians know it comes with loving them unfortunately, appreciate your kind words and advice.

Sorry to hear the sad news about your boy :( You cannot help fallen more in love with the boy brahmas they are always so loving :)

Sorry to hear about your boy, brahmas are lovely birds (have 2 in our flock). May have been a stroke??? our 4 yo welsummer boy went like this.
