Dear All,
I wonder if you are able to offer some advice to me.
I have an ex-battery hen whose crop is failing to empty overnight.
Approximately 3 weeks ago she had an impacted crop which my girlfriend and I managed to clear using warmed water mixed with olive oil and massage. She appeared to have recovered from this until recently we noticed that again her crop was not emptying overnight.
We quarantined the bird and changed her to a soft food diet consisting of apple sauce and yoghurt. Her crop still failed to empty. In addition to the soft foods we have tried using white maggots but these too have had little effect. She has been defecating a proportionally suitable amount in relation to her soft food intake.
This morning, we vommited her to empty the crop and have withdrawn food and are providing only water sweetened with brown sugar.
From what we have read we do not believe that she is suffering from sour crop as the crop contents do not smell when emptied. We also do not believe that impaction is a primary cause owing to the frequency and intensity of her defecation. We have read about pendulous crop and wonder whether this is something that should be investigated further. Her crop did sag after emptying this morning although it is looking better tonight.
Could anyone confirm whether my actions seem sensible? I plan to withdraw food for a total of 48 hours in an attempt to remedy the situation followed by the gradual re-introduction of solid foods.
I thank you in advance for taking the time to help me out.
Thanks
Jamie
