showing EGGS ?

Hi,

Got my Schedule for the Alrewas show- and am now considering entering a trio of bantam eggs??

Firstly can anyone advise as to what one is looking for in a good egg?

My girls all free range- some of the eggs are like sandpaper. The two girlies eggs I am thinking of entering have the most lovely bloom to their eggs, almost peachy, with a typical "eggshell" shine, no ridges, lovely oval shape..... am I on the right track!

Also when you enter a trio, are they meaning 3 eggs from the same hen, or a mixture of eggs from the same breed. i.e. any 3 eggs from any 3 bantams?

Are you judged on the collection of 3 or the best out of the 3?

Hope more experienced peeps can help.

Hi Sharron,

I'm no expert in this - but it is my understanding that all eggs entered are judged. This means it's not a freak 'good' egg that you have but consistently pretty good.

Judges may crack open an egg to look at the contents - the eggs should be reasonably fresh and shouldn't have problems such as blood spots / watery whites / thin shells etc.

On the outside, basically they are looking for the correct shape, shell colour, quality and shell thickness.

Hi,

Had a lovely time at the show, our girls eggs won a second. As for Millie, the sabelpoot decided against entering her as far too many foot feathers had broken.....

Here are some photos, we fell in love with the Quail D'uccle- which won reserve in show and a first in class.
Having spoken to the owner, we are going to have a look at a couple of garden D'uccles to add to our flock of 5.

We were chuffed - such clever girlies.

After the judging we also had a word with the judge about foot feathers on a poot. He reckoned because it was more of an exhibition kind of event and the public were welcome, that it would have been nice for them to see all kinds of birds including ours- and yes she would most cetainly have been marked down. He wasn't half as frightening as I expected. I even got to hold and have a chat with him about the gorgeous "quail d'uccle," who was reserve in show. He was very impressed with her, as we all were. No guesses for which hens we'll be adding soon!!

Sadly the winning birds are not ours...I wish!! :mrgreen:

We only got to show our eggs, as our millie poot had far too may of her foot feathers broken and missing!
