Selling eggs

Now that I'm getting some beautiful eggs, I'm actually getting more than I can use Its such a treat as my first group rarely laid & I still find it exciting (doesn't take much to make me happy :lol: )

I raise money for a charity now & again & I was thinking of 'selling' some, only to friends & neighbours, for a small amount of money in aid of the charity. A friend told me that I'm not allowed to do this (take money for the eggs) unless I'm registered, I felt sure it only applies to larger scale sales but does anyone know about this?

i think i'm right but some one else may know more.
you can't sell them as free range as you have to meet several rules to be classed free range eggs. you cant sell to a shop if they are going to re sell them, likewise you can't sell to a cafe or anyone else who will use them to cook and then sell to anyone else. but if you are just selling them as garden chook eggs to friends and so on I'm sure you should be ok. I sometimes take some to work and sell to workmates if I have extra's.

On the Defra website it says

Q15. Are farm gate/door-to-door sales of eggs from unregistered producers permitted?
A15. Yes - producers with fewer than 50 birds are not required to be registered with Animal Health EMI nor with the Great Britain Poultry Register and do not need to mark their eggs with a producer code and can sell these at their farm gate or locally door-to-door in the region of production and may also sell them direct to consumers at a local public market in which case they must show their name and address and provide consumer advice to keep eggs chilled after purchase along with a best before date for the eggs

So yes, if you have less than 50 birds - Good luck

Selling from your door or a market,you don't need any kind of licence.

I sell from the house and thats fine and you can put a board up on your gate / drive saying eggs for sale its all fine. W.I. markets will sell them for you and take a small commission.

Hi There,
I agree 100% with Pebojuno. I contacted DEFRA when I first wanted to sell surplus eggs and got the exact same message.
I sell to friends and neighbours and by word of mouth and they can't get enough! One of my customers now refuses to buy any shop eggs - even the best quality and says my eggs are the best!
Go ahead and enjoy selling your eggs. My customers love coming to see the girls and appreciate seeing how they are kept. Keep your customers informed about the decline in egg numbers in the winter though, that way they won't have too much of a shock when you're running low!

Thanks everyone, I thought I was right but you know what its like when someone puts doubt in your mind. I can go ahead with a clear concience! My mothers making so many cakes & puddings with all the eggs that Hubby & me are getting far too fat, that'll be one way to cut it down
