That's 'Hello' in isiZulu. I just wanted to say how helpful I've found this forum. I've been bitten by the chicken keeping bug for a few months now and took delivery of my four hens back in September last year. There's a real lack of resources for backyard chicken keepers in South Africa (although pretty common in the townships) and lots of people think I'm a bit mad wanting to keep chickens - until they taste the delicious eggs which are so much better than they buy in the shops. I've found the advice and friendliness of the participants in this forum really encouraging so I thought I would submit my first post to say so.

Hi Duncan,

So glad you've joined, that Googlemap link is really interesting. We'll all be looking forward to hearing how different things are in S. Africa, and seeing some pics of your home town and your flock, if you can manage this.
I don't suppose you need some of the advice on keeping chickens in temperatures of -10C or less, though, do you? How hot does it get where you live?

Welcome to the forum Duncan. Sounds like there is a great opportunity for a business there if backyard poultry keeping hasn't really started yet. Great if you could post a picture of your hens in the garden. Do you have a fox problem or similar there, or is it something worse -the occasional lion or something?

Welcome aboard Duncan from a South African living in England! This is a lovely forum and I am sure you will be made very welcome! Do post often as it would be lovely to hear what you are up too! Lovely part of the country you live in - nice and dry - not humid like Waterfalls in Durban where I come from! :D

Not quite sure why Google maps puts me in Knysna - yes, it is a lovely part of the world. I, however live in Dainfern, one of the northern suburbs of Johannesburg! When I get around to working out how to post photos - I will. In Cape Town today and tomorrow though so maybe at the weekend. My four hens seem to love living in Dainfern and so far there've been no complaints from the neighbours. Nor should there be, my girls are very well behaved for the most part and thoroughly Molly coddled not just by me but but the maid and gardener too (one of the many plus points of living in South Africa). We don't have the trouble of very cold weather thankfully but we get an awful lot of rain in the summer. We had an amazing storm on Saturday, hail the size of grapes that pelted down for about half an hour and led to the garden flooding to a depth of about two feet. The girls took it all in their stride though and retreated to their hen house until the water subsided. The next day they were scratching around in the vegetable plot like nothing had happened. The only 'predator' we have to be careful of where I live is dogs but after a couple forced their way in through the fence and chased my girls around until we caught them we strengthened the fencing and touch wood things have been fine ever since. Getting supplies got the girls is s bit of a trial but I have my parents visiting in a couple of weeks from the UK and good old Amazon has already delivered a load of hard to find stuff like Flubenvet and poultry spice for them to bring out - I'm a Brit living in SA.
