sand/slabs

if i was to use mostly slabs in the runs would i need to put sand down first would that help with the ground when it rains ? i have just moved some railway sleepers and large paving slabs to the front of the run where it gets the most muddest but when i pulled up one of the slabs the soil underneath was gross .

Maybe worth digging down 6" and in filling that with pea shingle to help drainage then put some soil and slabs on top.

would like to but my run is a little bit to large for that its about 33ft by 26ft roughly and knowing me i would dig to deep and make it worse :lol: :lol:

Use your slabs as stepping stones, dig the rest over then KEEP OF IT, the chooks will only
compact the surface, you can then dig a small section over weekly, incorporating pea gravel and
sharp sand. You can't make it worse by digging, its walking all over it that spoils the soil
structure and drainage. Unless you are on a high water table it works.

i do already do that with the slabs anyway , i have a few small areas where i can try that wil give it a go when it drys up a bit as at the mo its a bit to wet for digging and fridays not looking good ethier more rain on the way .
