Hi there,

I have just got five new hens to join our existing two. They are currently kept separate to ensure all is well before putting them together. However, one new one, a 16wk mottled orp has a runny nose. The discharge is clear, and she is blowing a few bubbles, but it is sticky enough to then gunk up her nostrils. In herself she seems well, eating, drinking and generally looking perky, with no foamy eyes or obvious bad breath etc. She is quite pale but then she is young and has quite a lot of white on her. The ark she is in is new. She had a few lice but these have just been treated.

Should I be worrying about the runny nose? Is it a vet , a Baytril or a wait and see moment... or none of the above?! Any advice will be gratefully, received.

Hi, i would be careful- it could be mycro or a respitory infection starting- a word with your vet would be advisable- better safe than sorry.
regards, David :)

Similar thing happened to me. I would keep them separate and give the young chicken some respite and see if it clears up in a couple of days. If not then maybe get some medication from the vet. The signs are quite good with no bubbles in the eyes etc. but definately take David's advice (he's a bit of a wonder! :D ) and keep them separate until you know if it's a cold or something worse.

How they are feeling better soon!
