Hi, My runner duck has lately developed a problem laying, she was laying the most perfect eggs everyday but she has now started to lay larger mishapen eggs every other day with very poor shells, she appears to spend most of the day doing what I can only describe as straining as though she is trying to lay. She also used to lay first thing in the morning but is now laying at various times of the day. Any ideas anyone as I am stumped

Is she getting regular access to grit/oyster shell? Ours eat quite a bit of ground up oyster shell which we always leave out in a dish. It's easily obtainable from usual poultry suppliers. I read that if the shell is soft, they have difficulty laying the egg, and also are more likely not to actually lay it, but get it in the peritoneum and then get egg peritonitis. We had this happen with a runner previously, and the grit definately helped. Hope she gets on OK - will be interested to hear what happens. :-)19

Hi, sorry for not replying sooner. The egg quality is improving very slowly everyday, she has also developed a limp which suggests to me that she may have been attacked by some sort of predator as I read somewhere that this can lead to faulty egg production :?
