I couldn't see the robot mother in the link for some reason but got the idea. Sounds like an augmented electric hen for warmth. I wasn't there - not guilty! 
But however wrong, it can't be wronger (is that a word?) than a 24 hour light bulb that seems to be the default for school hatch DIY!
Edit. Scratch that last bit I wrote before. I wasn't really paying attention last night.
It's interesting that they are not even trying to understand the vocalisations that mothers and chicks make but given enough data from studies like this, and a quantum super computer - maybe one day.

It runs around Rick and has the chicks following it, or each other because they "bonded" soon after hatching.
