Hello - this is my first message so forgive me if this has been discussed before. We currently have red mite in the chiken house and the usual stuff we use (Duramitex etc) doesn't seem to be so effective this time. Someone has suggested Callingtons reptile spray as being particularly good. Do you know if this is suitable for chickens or is there something else I can try? Thanks

We use wilko ant killer powder which contains permethrin. Never had a problem with mite since using it and had no adverse effects on the chickens health either, just dust it into all of the nooks and crannies and onto perches and when the mite come into contact with it they die. Couldnt say about the callington reptile spray as i have never used it but I do know when using with reptiles you are meant to remove all food and drink from a reptile enclosure for 24 hours to avoid poisoning though this could be because they are cold blooded. A lot of forum members here also seem to have success with diatom.

Hi David and welcome to the forum.
Sorry to hear about your red mite problems, you are not alone! I don't know if you have found the main Poultrykeeper website, which is a mineof information on all things chicken, there's a link at the bottom of the Index page, and this is the article on redmite and it's treatment which may be helpful. http://poultrykeeper.com/red-mite/red-mites

Welcome David,

Sorry to hear about your Red Mite problem... you're not alone. I also have an ongoing battle in one of our coops which has had various potions thrown at it.

I've tried lots of different products and I put together a 'top 8' that I've had consistent success with here too: My Top 8 Red Mite Products

Whatever you choose, remember to repeat treatment before a week passes since the life cycle of red mite is around 6-7 days in warm weather so they can hatch out, mature and lay hundreds more eggs before you treat a second time...

Do not know if this will be of any help to you,but it works for us.We
have a spray glue that I came across on good ole ebay.It is used on the
corners of the coop,at the ends of perches,on the end of the wood because
they like to hide in there. On the bottoms of the nest trays ( they still like
plastic ) and round the rims. All round the door frames and shutter. Now we
have used the glue to stick polythene to the inside of the roof. You can see them
but they cannot get through, should they try they remain stuck. We did use
grease at one time but it goes off,the glue never seems to dry, just remains
tacky all of the time.Does not bother the birds either. This week-end because
the coop is on stilts,we will spray all of the underneath.
It's got to be worth a try.
Good luck and welcome. :-)17 :-)17
