I'm not sure if this is a silly question but outside on my patio i have loads of those tiny red spider/mite looking things... the ones when you squash them they leave a red smeer. Are they the dreaded red mite we fear?

Please clarify

Cheers Keith

Not a daft question at all! :D The ones that roam aimlessly around on patios and stone walls are red spider mite and harmless.

haha i feel daft but had to ask the question! I thought i was infested before i even got the girls in the coop!

Cheers foxy

Interesting that you asked this question because before I got my hens I thought the same question, but then forgot all about it and didn't ask!

My neighbours must think im looney! crawling around on the patio squashing mites ha

:-)02 Redmite are way more menacing .... :-)03

Good that you ask though. Those horrors can turn up almost over night (jmho) :-)06 I am currently worrying when to take my chicks out of a "Safe" plastic enviroment... I'd hate them to get that real ones.... Until they grow a bit it'd take half an hour for a lazy mite or lice to drain one.... :-)03

These redSpider mites might make a good chicken food suplement (j/k) They are a pest for them to clear for you for sure.....

Here's some opinions on them

It is not a good idea to think of plastic as 'safe' from red mite. Any crevice, any join can harbour them. They can be found on the underside of plastic feeders and drinkers which are not cleaned regularly.

True dat....

But I was more thinking that they are in a very regularly cleaned, and small enviroment that has never had chickens near it. As soon as they come out of there things change. Larger area, less easy to clean and has had chickens in it briefly. ..Ohh... and loads more crevices etc. I get real edgey around redmite.... Hate the things :-)09

Here is another goofy question from a newby...are red mites located in certain areas of the world or everywhere??? Just curious... I live in US in Georgia...
Thanks
Brooke

Red Mites are not limited to any geographical area but they live and reproduce nicely in hot environment. But any poultry farm management should be proactive to get rid of red mites. Red mite power is better for kill them. Red mites lay eggs very fast and can reproduce exponentially. My termite treatment roseville team is working on role of wood ash against red mites.

Hello Nelsonpitter and welcome to the forum. Potash, or wood ash, is a common treatment against red mite and is the only one available here in France apart from lime wash for the stone coop walls. It is supposed to suffocate red mite and any other bugs on poultry. We use it in conjunction with various chemicals (Nettex total mite kill and Smite), biocides (Elector and barrier spray), a steam cleaner and creosote wood preservative. There is also diatom or diatomaceous earth, which is crushed sea shells. The principle is that the sharp grains cut through the mites' protective surface coating so they dehydrate and die. Red mite can multiply 100 fold in as little as 6 days, as we were reminded the other day! Nothing visible to totally infested in three weeks due to the coop temperatures in the sun rising to over 30 degrees.
