Fly tipping is a big problem here, in rural areas and just outside the city. Just yesterday I passed a couch and some other large piece of junk dumped in the gateway of a field. I just can't understand it. Years ago, some friends "recycled" some dumped furniture, by simply bringing it home with them, cleaning it and using it for several years! A lovely, large leather couch and chairs. The couch had one bit of broken timber underneath, which they easily repaired. I can't understand what's wrong with people who dump stuff. I mean, if you take the trouble to load it up and drive somewhere with it, why not just drive to the recycling centre and pay a few euro to leave it there?

There aren't enough recycling centres here Lady A, or else they are miles away. Local councils used to collect large items but many have stopped that or charge very high rates to collect. A lot of the serious fly-tipping is "commercial", some of it on a very large scale, but (for example) a plumber is no longer able to take an old bathroom suite to my local centre if he takes it in a van. I have permits to take my small box trailer there - car is useless for carrying stuff I need to take there. Make it easy for people to get rid of stuff and there's more chance they will act responsibly; make it difficult or expensive and they will fly-tip! No joined up thinking among those that run our councils!

That is brilliant, they should do that everywhere.
Fly tipping around here is a big problem, usually big lorry loads dumped in farm fields or on nature reserves. Two country lanes have recently been permanently closed and converted to cycle paths as up to 5 lorry loads were being tipped every night.
The fly tippers who dumped 2 van loads in the fields opposite us, watched by OH and the CCTV got a £10,000 fine and had their van crushed, the homeowner who let them take the rubbish "cheaply " got £2000 fine.
We got 3 lovely plant pots courtesy of fly tipping.
OH gets driven mad by the rubbish just thrown out from cars as she walks along the lane. At least she does a weekly pick up with her friend. Last weeks haul was 37 Costa cups, 18 Costa sandwich packets, 32 water bottles, 15 cigarette packets, 12 Red Bull cans 6 Coke cans

I hope they returned the cups & sandwich wrappers to Costa?!

Its builders sand/cement bags that are driving me crazy! Ive got a pile of 50 or 60 now, all marked with LDPE (No. 4 for recycling) but the only place I have found to take them are only interested in 5 tonnes! They are the same stuff as bread bags and shopping bags, which do have some support. Aparently it is beacuse the most intensive bit of the recycling process is cleaning the bags. Its a right pain as LDPE is the most greenhouse emitting plastic in landfill but also the easiest to recycle (if it is.)

Yes we do Lady A, after picking the Costa stuff up Karen usually takes it up to the nearest Costa which is a good car journey away and put it on a counter or table with the comment about time you made people bring their own reusable cups instead of littering our verges.
I also made some lovely new nesting boxes with fly tipped wood.
