Rain !!!

We're due thunder storms again on Friday. I don't think camping is for me.

2018 compared with 1976 heatwaves.

In 1976, I remember trying to teach 35 7-year-olds in a greenhouse-style south-facing classroom with only tiny slit windows for ventilation, then going home and camping out with our kids overnight on the lawn. And, bizarrely, a plague of ladybirds with nothing to eat swarming all over the dry grass. I've only seen one ladybird this summer.

Certainly an exceptional year down your way. Whether it’s due to global warming or just random chance remains to be seen. Still, nothing like the temperature in Japan. I didn’t even know that they had such temperatures. I thought they were much like us.
Interested in your observations about novichok. I think I would be reluctant to visit Salisbury. Not so much as a result of the first attack but more due to the second one. It’s obviously still hanging around or some maniac has released some more. Whether it’s from Russia or Porton Down is irrelevant to me.

Was thinking last night that usually when the weather forecasters talk about "Atlantic Fronts" influencing our weather, it's bad news, because it brings windy, wet and often cold weather.
Can you hear the cheers from over here? The sighs of relief?? Because it's those Atlantic Fronts pushing eastwards that are preventing the heatwave that's affecting Britain and the Continent from reaching Ireland! We've had nice temps of between 18 to 23C this week. There's to be a big change over the weekend though, with much cooler, wetter weather. Bring it on!!

What I can't get my head round is the (possibly true?) news report that the bottle was in a branded box. So where did he get it? This was a present for his partner! So you find what appears to be a branded bottle of perfume in its' box (but presumably the cellophane wrap was off it) you sniff it and get it on your hands but it doesn't smell like perfume so you give it to your partner. She can't smell the perfume either but puts it on her wrists!!!! :-)07 :-)07 :-)07

Novichok or not I wouldn't do that! If I try a perfume in a shop I always spray a little into the air before spraying it on me so I have some idea what it smells like, and I would never buy what was obviously an open bottle of perfume from anywhere. Who knows what use someone may have made of the bottle!!!! :-)03

I remember 1976. Holiday in Newquay on a burnt brown campsite drinking large amounts of lager to cool down. Mini clutch failed and I had to change the springs (very old Mini) on the grass by the tent.

Just upgraded the forecast here to 36C, but it's cooling down tomorrow with rain on the way we hope. Warnings to stay indoors and drink plenty of WATER! Grass is still green though- good thick clay based topsoil retains the water well but turns to sludge in Winter.

They covered the Salisbury incidents on the news here. Bit worrying that such potentially lethal stuff is just 'lying around'.

It sounded from the reports as if both of them were living on the edge of normal society - she was living in a hostel for homeless people in Salisbury - quite near to where they found the bottle - both were on drugs, and he constantly investigated rubbish bins skips etc for stuff he could use, eat or sell on. It was reported that both of them picked up discarded fag ends and smoked what was left in them. So a bottle of what looked like perfume in an original box, even if opened, would have perhaps seemed a good find.
We both grew up in Salisbury, and still visit quite often. In recent years, there have been a lot of changes - many homeless people begging on the streets, swathes of shops going out of business, and a very large proportion of the shops now turned into coffee houses and gift shops for the summer tourists, and of course, if they stop coming it has a knock-on effect. I'm not at all worried about going there - its one of those 'perception of risk' situations, isn't it, like when driving to the airport is hundreds of times more dangerous than actually taking your flight, but we all drive around all day just the same. And at least Salisbury Hospital has specialist skills at looking after patients with Novichok poisoning by now!

I agree the couples lifestyle was somewhat alternative, so I think picking up a bottle like that would have been normal for them. If you are going to get poisoned by Novichok you definitely want to be in Salisbury. Doesn't quite seem KGB style does it putting it in a branded perfume bottle. Poisoned umbrella tip much more their style.
Officially hot today we have been allowed to remove our ties at work

Talking to a friend this afternoon I was told that apparently the "perfume" was found in a public loo ... I agree with you about risk perception Marigold, it's so unfair that the media always blow things out of proportion. My mother hated it when I was motor racing until I pointed out that I would get much faster medical treatment if I crashed at the circuit as well as probably being airlifted to hospital. At the time I lived in Suffolk, no mobile 'phone and no air ambulance. It hasn't stopped me living in rural areas.

It was 30.5 degrees according to the car temp display as drove to Shrewsbury this afternoon. Good to get home to a cool house!

Our weather station is located in a small Stevenson screen, on part of a wall in a corner which never gets any direct sun. It was 30.5 this afternoon, though it must have been much more than that out on the lawn, in full sun, where the dog chose to sit! We watched some video on the news tonight of people sunbathing and playing rounders in full sun in a London park. Incredible. I'm not sure how the Met. Office determine what they say is 'the temperature' at any particular time, it seems to me it varies so much within quite a small area. Anyone know about this?

I just assumed it was from weather stations they have situated in various places. The nearest one they quote to us is Gravesend Kent.
The temperature under the oak tree at lunchtime yesterday was 34C.
It started to rain at 2.20 this am quite hard, stopped after about 5 mins, then started again and rained steadily until about 6. Which made it 61 days here without rain. We are due more this evening which will successfully ruin our chances of watching the lunar eclipse, best bet is to hope the rain and cloud come a bit later

I would trade the chance to watch a lunar eclipse for some rain. Nothing here overnight and a very small chance of any in the next week. Mind you, the eclipse does look interesting, and at a sensible time of night for viewing, it appears. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-44945452

i'm glad you got some rain, though. 34C must be unbearable. It's bin day here this morning - those men are heroes, running around in the heat with the stinky bins.

We've had some rain too!! Oh, yes! Happy dance! :-)08 :-)08 It was just a couple of heavy showers last night, but I understand we will get more rain over the weekend. Yippee!
I wonder if I will still be so joyful about it, come Winter??

I've got my new 300L water butts, but they aren't set up yet. I may need to get help. I have no idea how to go about drilling out to put the taps in, or how to put the diverters on the down pipes! And I want to connect the butts to each other too. I have the linking kit to do it.

Jobs, LadyA. There's no end to them. Just been on to the builder in Unst having noticed that the corrugated iron roof on my 26ft X 13ft hen house is almost rusted through. Something about salt spray!
Just when you think that you're ahead of the game there's more expense to dent your bank balance.

I was volunteering in the library again this afternoon, down town, 1/4mile from our house at the top of the hill. Amazed to hear 10 mins of heavy rain drumming on the library roof, so texted OH re getting washing in. Text came back "Rain? What rain?" It hadn't made it up the hill as far as our garden! Thunderstorm forecast for Andover tonight, 10 miles away, but not for us, - of course. Maybe some on Sunday, can only keep hoping.
And the bins weren't collected today. Maybe the bin men had to go home early yesterday in the terrible heat. I wouldn't blame them, I don't know how they manage to do their job at the best of times. Not good for us, though, as last week OH got the bin as far as the front door and filled it, but forgot to move it up to the gate, so we have 2 weeks' worth of extremely ripe rubbish in a very full bin.

Oooh it's raining here. I'm praying for a huge downpour and then to clear up for the "blood" moon tonight. I know we can't have everything. Even the hens are out in it, when normally they'd be hiding under shrubs. Shall we all do a rain dance ? ?

Just start raining here, heavily which has blown our chances of the eclipse, we are thwarted everytime something celestial happens. Still we need the rain, hope it doesn't flatten the barley which is due to be combined next week. OH loves watching a combine at work, she got very excited earlier when a massive brand new combine went down the lane

3mm in the rain gauge last night.
Better than nothing i suppose!
but this morning I have found out why rain smells so good on dry ground.
