Hi,

Only been keeping the chickens for a week but noticed one of them is a bit quiet after being equally as active as the other 2 when we bought them. She seems to be walking ok but not seen her eat or drink yet today. She is the eldest of the 3 but has not yet started laying. Is this quietness an indication that she will start laying soon ?

Thanks for your help

Hi,

On checking again just now it might appear that her crop is full, is that the right phrase ? She opens and closes her mouth as if to let out a belch and when her crop is massaged she crows a little bit to indicate that we have touched the right spot.

What to do now ?

If you have only had them for a week and suspect she is not well, it might be a good idea to contact your supplier. Without any history of your hen it would be very difficult to help I am afraid. Was the crop full in the morning? Any odour? Does she feel a good weight? These factors will help to understand the extent of the problem and useful to let the supplier know.

Some say the crop when full is like a golf ball, this was certainly not the case at all.

Weight wise and appearance she seems pretty good.

I think a trip back to the supplier is the right way to go even if it's a free demo in clearing the crop !

Will keep you updated

Well after a lovely visit to Mini Meadows the very helpful young girl says there is nothing wrong and to prove it she took the bird out of the box and placed her on the counter and had my bird almost eating out of her hand. How to embarrass a new owner hee hee.

Just to confirm her decision she had another member of staff examine the bird and came to the same conclusion. That was me easily satisfied so came home and put the bird back in the run and she happily joined in with the other birds foraging etc !!

At least she had a nice ride out in the car, I did have a McDonald's chicken burger on the way home as a sort of mental punishment for her should she think about playing that trick again !!

Glad she is OK, might have been just a hiccup as she was settling in. There is nothing to be embarrassed about either, observing and getting to understand normal behaviour(of a chicken... :D )does take a while! :D
