The Brinsea is very easy to clean - all this adds to the confusion doesn't it :?

Hi Anne,

Yes that does make things more difficult if they are both easy to clean.

Maybe I should just look at the price and see which one I can get at the best deal on and let that be the deciding factor as I can't seam to find anything else that is different :)

Thanks again for all your help,

Greenhen

HI everyone,

Sorry I'm asking more questions.

I've just been looking at prices of the Brimsea Octagon 20 Advance (the one with the humidity control unit) and the CRom Suro

There is a massive difference in price approx £100. Is there any reason why the Brimsea is so much more expensive?

Thanks again,

Greenhen

Sorry I think I've made a bit of a mistake. Looking back Tim reviewed the RCom Pro 20 which is about the same price as the Brimsea Octogon 20 ex.

Does anyone one know much about the CRom Suro?

Thanks again for all your help this is lots more complicated than I first thought. The more I learn the more questions I am finding are raising their heads :)

Thanks so much everyone for helping me,

Greenhen

Greenhen - saved a lot of money by buying my incy at The Incubator Shop online.Man who runs it is so helpful and will give really good advice - had my incy within a couple of days - service so good which is rare these days. He will be able to advise you impatially as he sells lots of makes. :D

HI Anne,

Thanks so much for that.

I'll give him a ring and talk to him about what teh differences are.

Thanks again for all the help,

Greenhen

I really liked the SURO. I found the pump thing a little bit of a fiddle at first and I only did one hatch with it but it was dead easy to clean and had great visibility through the side to see the eggs / chicks.

I reviewed it for another website and he hasn't used it.... hmm must chase that up because if he doesn't want to use it, I'll put it on PK. Takes a good few hours to write a review.

HI Tim,

Thanks so much for that - I would be very interested in ready that review.

Have your reviewed the Octogon 20 by any chance?

Thanks again,

Greenhen

I emailed the chap and he said he's been updating his site - but hopes to get the review online in a week or so.

No, I haven't - used an Octagon 20DX for years though - very reliable. This was before Auto-humidity modules though - so completely different machine to what you've been looking at.

HI Tim,

Thanks for getting back to me.

I'm still very unsure which one to get :)

Is there anywhere else I can look to read viewers on incubators which may help?

Thanks,

Greenhen

I haven't come across any others to be honest...

Most people are selling them and testing / photographing and writing a review / putting it online takes a good few hours work so they tend to copy and paste what the manufacturer gives them - specifications and sales blurb.

If it were me right now, I'd probably go for the Brinsea because I loved the old Octagon 20DX and I haven't tried the new one yet but I do like my RCOM20.

It would be good to get a few more reviews on the site but finding people willing to write or review anything is always hard.

HI Tim,

Looking at the pictures the old Octagon 20DX looks like the same incubator with the added extra humidifier unit which they say you can buy as an extra to upgrade one of their other incubators. What did you love about it?

Also what do you like about your RCOM20?

I've been looking on line and the domestic fowl trust in Evesham (which is 45mins from me) has the Brinsea so I'll be able to look and handle it but I've not found anywhere that has the Rcom range any ideas?

Thanks again so much for all your help it has been really helpful.

Hi Greenhen, the domestic fowl trust at Honeybourne does have quite a selection of incubators(I live 13 miles from there)which you can look at.Also,CountryWide Stores at Evesham also has incubators.

HI Lydia,

Thanks so much for the info. I'll have a look at both this morning.

The Octagon 20DX and 40DX has been around for many years and 'back in the day' on the old pekin bantams forum, most of the breeders were using them in anger. I used one for 5? years I think and it never once let me down. Well built and provided good results.

The negative point was it was difficult to clean under the lid - the electronics / fan had a plastic guard around it that would suck up fluff during a hatch and get messy. After a couple of years, I started using a separate hatcher (still use it now) so I can add eggs to the incy at different times and mix chicken / duck eggs, taking them out for the high humidity part at the end, hatching and cleaning a Brinsea Polyhatch. The rest of the Octagon was very easy to clean.

The RCOM is easy to operate - press and hold 'Chicken' walk away - top up water every other day, if you forget, it beeps at you! I have found it easy to clean - it comes apart but you still have potential for the fan grill to suck up some fluff into the electronics but with care cleaning (I do keep a can of compressed air for blasting these things from time to time), this isn't a problem. Again though, I rarely use this to hatch.

The Suro was the easiest to clean - the electonics in the lid can be unscrewed and cleaned (again with care... no water!).

Have a look at them and see what you think.

I have used Flyte so Fancy for years (fantastic customer service) and Chickenhouse man a few times. I would try to buy from someone who is reliable because incubators can and do break down from time to time. Interhatch who distribute RCOM in the UK have been amazing - I could phone them up, speak to a techy guy and discuss problems - they have sent parts in the post next day. When I tested the SURO, they sent me a loan unit for 6 months.

Hope this helps and do let us know what you finally go for!

HI Tim,

Thanks so much for the link and I've read the review.

I am now keep going to and from with the Octogon 20with humidifier and the two Rcom ones. As I will be hatching my eggs in this incubator as well which design would suit this better as so far I've ony been able to see the Ocotogon and haven't found anywhere to look at the Rcom incubators.

Thanks again for your help and good reviews - by the way have you done one for the Brimsea?

Greenhen

HI Everyone,

I'm nearly there on the incubator. :D

after lots and lots of research I'm thinking of getting so I thought until the weekend.

While I was at the domestic fowl trust on Saturday the lady said that some one the other day got the Octagon20 with out the cradle and tips it in the three directions himself and bought a Novital Covatutto 16 for the hatching.

What does everyone think of that idea?

Thanks again for all your help,

Greenhen

i like the seperate hatcher idea, thats what i have been doing these past few weeks with a cheap polystyrene incy that i picked up off ebay. It stops a lot of the fluff problem with the lid of the brinnsea but as to the not having the turner, if your going to be around to tilt the brinsea that would be fine, i have a bad memory lol so im pretty glad of the turner.
good luck with whatever you finally decide on :D
